New to jaguar, questions about 2003 x type gas mileage, reliability..
Ok, let me start out by saying i love luxury cars. I have a benz and a cadillac. I wanna purchase a third vehicle that saves on gas. I started off by looking at at the ford focus. I then decided to stay luxury and have just begun investigating the x type. I have read reviews at various websites and cant get a consensus on the gas savings. I dont care whether its a 2.5 or 3 liter engine. power is not my concern, getting better gas mileage than my cadillac deville and mercedes is my main goal.
lastly, are the 2003 models pretty good as far as quality control, reliability. I dont wanna spend more than 7,000 dollars, which is why im looking at the 2003. Peace and thanx for responses.....

Hey, welcome to the forums!
The fuel consumption difference between the 2.5 and the 3.0 is apparently not that great. I'd rather have bought a 3.0 for the extra grunt, but found the ideal 2.5 for me and have been happy with it.
I'm keeping an excel sheet on my fuel usage, and over the last 5510km (3424 miles) I've averaged 10.37 litres per 100km, or in your exotic units 22.68 MPG.
I typically drive about 450km before filling the car up, and the consumption has varied between 9.83 and 10.77 l/100km. Not much of a practical difference. My daily drive is about 30 kilometres, of which roughly half is highway (80-100km/h).

Again, welcome.
My '03 3 litre gets 100 km out of 9.7 litres of gas, which is around 23 mpg US if my math is correct. I do very little stop and go driving, and I don't notice much of a decrease in mileage. In a year and a half, which included a trip to Fla, all I have done is renew all the fluids (incl. the transmission, transfer case, and rear diff ) and replace a driver's seat tilt motor that was cranky when I bought the car. Quality control seems excellent, the car is very taut and quiet (the equal of my old CTS) and if I can sum up the Forum Crowd's experience, it seems that some of the Xs had early teething problems, but are pretty reliable now- particularly if they haven't been thrashed and the original owner took advantage of the recall/service bulletins under warranty. It's a sad thing that they're an alternative to a Focus on the used market, as my experience is that they are one of the most underrated little gems on the road. I predict that you will LOVE the car.

Lol.....cool, i will not tell anyone about the price. Really, thats what hooked me, why get a focus or similar car when, for a lil more money, get a premium vehicle as nice as the x type?

Mine's a 2002 2.5 with 68k miles and I get great mileage. Around 22-24 mpg. I'd say 75% highway driving.
The problems you'll encounter are Jaguar prices on any silly little spares. Right now I need to replace a brake pressure sensor on my ABS module. It's a piddly little plastic thing, 2" long maybe. $225.
I had to replace a headlight. I decided to replace both sides because they were a little dull and wanted two nice shinny lights. $800 each! And I had to drop the bumper to replace them!
But to drive... it's a treat. The ride is a little hard because of the AWD and the low profile tires. But mine cruises on the freeway at 80 mph all day.
Enjoy your X-Type.
Oh, if you can get a manual 5 speed. I wish I had got one. The auto is fine, but the X-Type was the last Jag made with a 5 speed manual box.

I have an 03 3.0 with 47k miles. On this last tank I got an average of 13.5 MPG...but it was all city driving and all trips were pretty short(less than 2-3 miles) which apparently is perfect for horrible MPG. i also drive like an old lady, hardly ever going over 3k rpms. The display does show 27-29 MPG on the rare times I get on the freeway. So, something else to think about is your driving habits.

THanx fly and carwatcher. You guys making me wanna go get one tomorrow, lol. My daily driving consists mainly of taking about a 8 mile trip, round trip, nonstop on a highway, and some, not much, city driving of about 4 miles when i do. Never thought about a manual since i drive automatics. I might give that a look when i go out shopping for one....

Agreed, go with a 04+ since major problems with the AWD system were "corrected" by then.
Also, go with the 3.0 if possible. The mileage from the 2.5 does not make up for the lesser amount of "grunt".

I had to laugh. I just replaced a 16 yr old SUV, owned from day one. Looked for a car to be driven summers only in MN. Tried new Focus (had to special order what I wanted) and looked at Civic SI, and Acura TSX used. All were manuals. But my wife knew of my passion for rag tops. She told me about an old Alpha, low miles. Rejected, but searched for convertibles turned up a nice 2005 XK, with 51K. Love it - although I miss the manual, but got 28 mpg on a 500 mile trip up to MN's north shore. Good luck.
