OEM Nav install

Has anyone installed the factory OEM nav in a non-nav X? Will a unit from an S or XJ work as well?

If you have any info please reply. DO NOT just recomend an aftermarket GPS, thats not the route I want to go.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Rich

I wanted to do that to mine too, but its not cheap, not easy, and not recommended. But if you do it let me know, I may reconsider. Id love to have the OEM nav. Check out this thread.

Me too! That would be awesome :)

Why is it NOT recommended?

i guess x-type&s-type has the same nav
but not the xj
fiting the screen is easy but fiting the nav system is really hard
IMO go for after market its much more fun !!!

after market guzzillian times better ...with more options, and i understand you want to keep it stock looking...but once you start hacking up things theres no turning back ..but on a good note davex has a good write up

A) It's a LOT of money.

B) It's a lot of work.

C) When done your car will be worth, perhaps, $500 more.

That being said I did a virgin install on my 97 BMW 740iL, a ton of work but IMO well worth it. But then again, I also did the whole job myself, if you have to have a technician do it, it's cheaper to sell your car and buy one with Nav.

i second that rid14...if you have the skills to do it and can get the parts from a donar car go for it.....if someone else has to do its biiiiiig money ...i dont want to discourage you in your plan, most forum members would like to do it, but its not plug and play theres more involved....i did a swap for my cousins x-type and boy it was a trip i had his car held up for a month, trying to figure it out ....but eventually i got it....now he's complaining he cant play dvds on it ...so now we are going to trash it and he's getting the same double din deck as i have

You know, I looked at that thread and this looks like it's a MUCH easier job than it was on my 740iL. On that car the entire center console, LF seat, B pillar cover, rear seat, decklid trim, etc all had to come out and I had to feed a harness twice the thickness of a garden hose through the entire car and splice about 20 wires AND get the damned thing coded.

This, in comparison, looks like a piece of cake compared to what it took to do a virgin install on the BMW.

if you have the skills go for it ,the stock deck looks real nice...i was going to do it to mine
but instead i did it to my cousins and at that time davex did not have a write up so i was on my own...what i decided in the end was the after market deck witch is a whole entertainment system with satalite navi sirius radio dvd back up camera the works ...sometimes i just sit in my car messing with it ...but some people dont need all that , the stock navi is a beutiful peice of electronics..my cousin loves it but now he want all the bells and whistle ...i said to him stay with the stock because im not installing another deck anytime soon .....good luck .if you have any problems with the install we can help
