Passenger Door Lock- not locking
 

Hello Gentlemen;

there are lots and lots of door latch/handle topics that I found, but most of them dealt with inability to open the door from outside due to a clip. I am able to open the door from both inside and outside successfully, but the actuator is not engaging the lock in the front passengers (USA) lock. The system seems to think it is, in fact, engaging said lock because it will lock all other doors and arm the car.

Further, I can hear the mechanism loudly working when I lock the car, (either manually or with the fob) , but it fails to achieve anything. This certainly seems like a different situation from the standard door clip failure. This is more directly associated with the actuators ability to engage the door lock.

I sort of have the same issue but not quite. My rear right door is constantly locked as of about a month ago.

All of the other doors will unlock when pressing the key fob or opening another door from the inside, but the rear right door stays locked and cannot be opened from the inside or outside, cannot be manually unlocked from the inside either. There is no noise from the door when working the key fob.

I'm thinking maybe the motor itself can be broken inside the door panel? Does anyone have any good tip on how to troubleshoot this problem?

I think the only way would be to take the door card off, then get an angled view (maybe with auto wand mirror) & actuate the lock. You MIGHT be able to see a problem.

Thanks Gents. Took the door apart. And made a video. Please turn the volume up to hear the noise it is making........ Incredibly, her sister, the XJ-S convertible in the background was pulling the exact same stunt! —-fortunately some greasing and “exercising” on that car’s door cured the problem. I was going to proceed to remove the actuator completely at this point, but it was going to begin raining hard down here and the convertibles stay in the garage, and as close as I was to the garage door I still would have gotten quite wet. So I put everything back together. Somewhat.

Based on the noise we are hearing, is it save to say the actuator has perished? Is it fixable if I take it apart?

Any ideas welcome.

That sounds like the internals of the switch are gone to me. Like the actuation is occurring internally but not moving whatever it's supposed to be attached to to move the exterior components is not doing it's job. I've researched this in the past and never seen anyone who took one apart. On another thread (door jammed from inside and out) the guy ended up cutting the mechanism out and did so much damage that he couldn't see what the failure was.

Thanks. There are some very good deals on used ones. I hope they are all interchangeable. I just found one for 24 dollars with delivery.

What clips should I get to complete this? I did break several door panel clips, but fortunately I have several new ones stored from when I replaced the speakers. Seems a fairly easy job, but if there are any pitfalls, please let me know. Looks like the hardest task may be transferring the rod with the white clip from the old mechanism to the new one.
