possibility of getting '07 x-type...opinions pls

Hi gang, well talking to an acquaintance of mine and might be getting an x-type in for sale this week. it's a 2007 model. Don't have much info on it. I hear that the first year models had lots of problems..how do the later models rank? any issues? things to look out for? I like the fact that it has AWD (good for our winters). Is the trunk and back seats rooms enough?
I had thought of getting an xj8, but this is another option.
Any info would be great.thanks
Fab

mines is a 07,this is the model year used by jag to try out all the upgrades that they were going to use on there final production run, only thing they didnt fit were the big ugly indicators on the bumpers, which i think spoiled the look of the cat.

If you're looking for roomy back seats, the X type or even the S type is not what you want. Trunk is great -very roomy, but no legroom whatsoever in back seats.

Perform a search of this forum as this question has been posed many times in the past.

As with any second-hand vehicle, it is best to have the complete service history and know what is still left to be completed so the vehicle is dependable.

fabchef, the backseat has adequate room considering that it is a mid-size car unless you are 6 foot something and drive with the seat all the way back.

As for issues, it suffered from a lot of the same that plagues the other years which is mainly vacuum leaks and the rear suspension needing periodic looking at and possible suspension link replacement. But, these are fairly easy things and if you have any mechanical ability, you can tackle these yourself.

The one thing that I will caution you on and this applies even to the 2007 is if you are looking for a car to drive "spiritedly", then the X-Type is not your car. The X-Type is great for getting out on the highway, setting the cruise at 70-80 mph and clicking off 500 miles. It will do that day in and day out and do it comfortably. You go light ot light as fast as you can and well, it is going to drain your wallet just as fast. By no means am I saying that you can't have fun with the car every now and then. But, you do it on a routine basis and it is going to pull out its claws and take a chunk of your wallet. This is where the XJ8 is going to be more the car you can play with light to light.

If you can get the X-Type for a good price, then go for it. You will be amazed as to the complements that you will get and all the questions about "how can you afford a car like that?". You can chuckle to yourself and drive away knowing that you have them envious of you.

The back seat leg room is about the same as my friend's Toyota Corolla. But having said that, I have owned my '03 for almost a year now, and it is probably the most enjoyable car to drive I have ever owned. Mine has about 115K on it, and I have had the usual vacuum leak problems, etc., but it has been surprisingly easy to work on. The AWD has been great, as we have had a lot of snow this year. I agree with others here that maintenance records are important. These are basically reliable cars, but they do not like to be neglected, nor (as Thermo said), are they drag racers. An XJ-8 is a totally different animal, though. I would love to have both. I would not pay too much for an X-type though. Check book values -resale value is very low, which is what makes a good one such a bargain. A fixer-upper will put you under water very quickly though.
