Rear driver side tire/suspension noise? Need help, please.
My Jag is making this noise (
). Mechanic spun the wheel while it was lifted and came to conclusion that the back, driver side brakes were bad and causing the noise. He took the vehicle for a spin and heard this noise (or a different but very similar noise) and stuck with the diagnosis that it is, in fact, the brakes.
Changed the rotors/pads in both wheels and noise went away for a day or two. Now the same noise appears to be back. Mechanic says it is the air suspension for the rear right side causing the noise....occurs during slow/coasting speeds. About 35 mph and below..
So far i've spent a $1,000 guessing away I guess, as no mechanic has solved the issue. Rick johnson told me it was a warped front rotor (didn't even test drive it). Another Rick johnson told me it was a wheel bearing.
Your thoughts and opinions are most definitely appreciated!

There's no "air suspension" on an X-Type. Start with simple: Make sure your wheels aren't bent. Your noise is rotational metal-on-metal, which for me rules out the brakes. I think it's a wheel bearing or CV joint on the axle.

My guess is the wheel bearing or lower cv shaft issue. There aren't many rotating parts down there and it's defintely a rotational noise (to me) so it's either a bearing in the differential, wheel bearing, could be the cv axle lower half shaft seperating from the upper shaft, warped rotor or could even be that maybe the caliper is not seating correctly on the hub? Good luck!

black, look at the CV shaft. Specifically, look at the black boots for the CV joints. Those have a band that holds the rubber boot to the shaft. IF the end of the strap gets bent, it could be tapping on something on the underside of the car. After that, do you happen to have the check engine light on right now with a C1165 or C1175 code? If so, then the reluctance ring is toast on that side of the car and what you are hearing is the ring bouncing around inside the spindle.

Thermo,
Now that I think about it, my DSC system has been acting up. ABS coming on and DSC fault coming up in screen with yellow light. Could this be related to the clicking noise coming from the wheel? The lights come on every-now-and-then and then go off..sometimes the DSC yellow light will flash one or two times during driving as well...

Just to confirm - this is a AWD car, right? Any recent hit of large road debris or deep pothole? If you've isolated this noise to the RR wheel then you need a full inspection of the right rear hub assembly. You'll need to take off the brake caliper and rotor to check integrity of the speed sensor. If you've got a bad rear hub bearing it'd be a fairly easy repair. Part number (AWD car) is C2S46772.

Geeeeeez so my wife takes the car to go to work and calls me that the car is straggling or limping. Moving slow when she presses the gas. Bought the car a year ago and it has been good but now it seems like it is just crashing and totally falling apart. On top of the wheel noise and ABS lights flashing on/off every-now-and-then and DSC fault flashing on/off, and engine light on (code P1646) NOW, on top of everything else, a transmission fault came on the screen that included the red P in a circle and red exclamation symbol in a circle! I am lost!

So I bought a second 03 x-this spring. I got a great deal on it because the transmission was acting up. I did not have the red lights you have, but I had a transmission that would go into limp mode and would the cruise control message would flash up. It had some other codes that I knew were air leaks so I went to Oreilley's and got the upper and lower manifold gasket kits. Around $30 for the pair. Replaced the intake manifold gaskets and not only were my air leak codes gone my transmission problems disappeared as well. Crazy but I'm not complaining.
As for your squeek. My first thought was the abs ring on your hub.

blackonblack, then it sounds like you have found your issue. The battery cables are known to fail right at the battery terminals and this will cause a low voltage condition on the car, leading to random issues. You can get generic cables from the auto parts store and replace your factory cables and that should fix the tranny problem. As for the ticking sound that started everything, that will require some more looking.
