Rear Parking Aid / Reverse Sensors not working.
Hi all,
New to the site and having some issues with the search function so posting my own thread and hoping for the best. We own a 2005 X Type SE D Saloon, when we put the car in reverse NO SOUND OR CHIME is made. I have located the parking module in the Spare Wheel Well and there is NO SOUND, CLICKS OR CHIMES coming from ANY of the sensors on the rear bumper. When we attempted to get a read off the multimeter on the 3 clips that run into the Parking Module we were unsuccessful and received a 0.00 reading every time so unsure if we are doing this wrong. We have 3 clips/ plugs into the parking module, 2 x 12 Pin and 1 x 16 Pin. One Black Clip 12 Pin and 2 White/Cream coloured clips 1 of which is the 16 pin the other is 12 pin. The first clipped into the parking module was the black 12 pin followed by the white 12 pin followed by the 16 pin. I tried to get a reading with car OFF, Ignition ON in Neutral and Ignition ON in Reverse Handbrake ON. The reverse lights DO Turn ON and work absolutely fine. The Parking Aid Fuse (33 in glovebox) has not blown either. So now we are at a loss as to what to do/ check and therefore how to fix. If someone would be kind enough to explain what our next checks and steps are and how to do it that would be amazing as we've already spent over £1500 just getting this car back on the road after previous owners allowed her to corrode dangerously and drilled the top off the fuel tank causing serious damage. We've owned the Car Exactly 2 weeks and 3 days today and its spent 2 weeks solid at the garage for repairs to give you an idea. So if we can save some money and fix bits ourselves it would be great. If you've made it this far into our post, thank you very much! :) TL/DR: REAR PARKING SENSORS DON'T WORK, NO CHIME SOUND WHEN CAR IN REVERSE, NO SOUND COMING FROM INDIVIDUAL SENSORS, GLOVEBOX FUSE HAS NOT BLOWN, REVERSE LIGHTS WORK PERFECTLY, UNABLE TO GET A READ ON MULTIMETER ON 3 CLIPS/PLUGS ATTACHED TO PARKING AID MODULE. |
Christina, first off, lets prove that you have power where you need it. We are going to deal with the 16 pin connector only at this point. if you look, in one of the corners of the connector, you should find a brown wire. This is the power coming into the module. With the plug undone from the parking module, stick the red lead of a multimeter into that spot in the plug and touch the black lead to any bare metal spot n the car (ensure the ignition is in the RUN position). Do you get 12 VDC there? If yes, then we know the module is getting power. if no, then reconnect the plug and go to the passenger fuse box and find fuse F33. If you look on the top of the fuse, you should see 2 small metal tabs. Using the multimeter, touch the black lead to any metal part of the car and one at a time, touch each of the metal tabs. Did you get 12 VDC on both tabs? If yes, then the brown wire between the module and the fuse box is broken (respond back and I will tell you the next step if you don't know what to do), if you get 12 VDC on one terminal, but not on both, then you have a bad fuse. If you got 0 VDC on both terminals and are sure you were making contact, then you have a problem with your fuse box. You can try twisting the blade of the fuse a little bit to see if you can get it to make contact, but that would just confirm a bigger issue.
Lets see what you find with this initial round of checks and then we can take things from there. |
Gear Box sender
In my case it was a failed sender switch at top of gearbox.
Also stopped reversing lights too; is that so in your case? You could do with adding in your LOCATION details in your forum profile. |

Hi all thank you for your replies.
I will have to hold fire on fixing the reverse parking sensors as we have had further issues with the vehicle. This time during a drive home at around 70mph on hard acceleration the coil warning light came on on the dash, the engine management light then flashed up and the engine cut out. After a trip home followed by the RAC we are now looking at possible Fuel Pump / Injector issues. If thats the case then weve just wasted £1700 on this car to become scrap metal as we cant afford the extra costs to fix these other issues. Since owning the car ( 3 weeks tomorrow, 2 weeks of which it spent solidly in the garage being repaired) we've had the Suspension Arm Mounts and Sills all fabricated and welded, New EGR Valve, Fuel Tank sealed and refitted, fully under sealed, New Battery, Major Service with Fuel Filter and MOT. Feeling extremely deflated at the moment 😥 so far this car seems a money pit. Will see what the outcome of the newest issues are and go from there. |
Flashing coil light on a diesel with poor performance is very easy to fix. Look up "flashing coil" in the forum and do the "Mr. Muscle fix".
