Removing Arm Rest from Slider-Help!
 

Greetings! Bill here in Wooster Ohio. I have a Jaguar X-Type and I am getting it ready for our Annual Concours and need to replace my arm rest cushion from the "slider" that is over the storage area. Also, I need to remove the slider as well to repaint that. Any assistance with this? I really don't see any familiar fasteners or screws. Thank you! Bill in Ohio.

Bill, let me look at my service manual and I will give you a detailed description of how to do what you are after. Starting to get a little rusty with my X-TYpe interior knowledge. May have to find a car to work on. He he he he.

Get a large piece of bacon and put it inside the storage cubby.
Borrow your friends Rottweiler and lock it inside the car.
Works every time. :)

Remove the upper compartment from the lower (screws are on the hinge).

Open the upper compartment and release the slide. Move the armrest pad forward a bit; the screws will be visible through the holes in the slider bracket itself.

Doesn't make sense to describe it, but you'll see what I'm talking about as soon as you have the armrest/upper compartment assembly flipped upside down in front of you.

Thanks, wa3ra! I will try this again and maybe I have an earlier model arm rest as I see no screws - Thermo thought that punch screws or similar were used, I will post some pictures. Thanks. Bill

It was the same on both my 2002 and 2005, the screws are under the slide bracket itself, but it needs to be about mid-slide to see them.

They are in the bottom of the armrest proper.

I added three images - I see no screws at all. They look to be rivits. One picture has the slide part way open. The only screws I see are on my REPLACEMENT arm rest - not on the original that is attached somehow to the slider. Any assistance is appreciated!

Let me get a look at mine; IIRC, the screws are under the black plugs, the sliders don't actually need to be removed.

I've replaced the armrests (and consoles) in both cars, and know that I've had these apart!

Bill, unfortunately, it is looking like you will have to drill out those rivets to remove what you are after. Then you will need to find some rivets that will replace what you drilled out. You can do that at any hardware store. No need to get Jaguar specific rivets.

Looking at mine, both sets had small "triangular" shaped screws where you have rivets.

Not sure if they changed at some point, mine came from different sources, but both have the same type of screws.

Good news! Thanks to all of you who gave useful comments! There are two 20" torx screws that hold the armrest with slider in place! So, I removed the armrest with slider and am getting it ready for repaint. I will post some pictures. Great news is that when I show the car, I can install the brand new armrest from Jaguar then I can reinstall the armrest (beginning to crack) with the slider. What I like about the armrest with slider is that I get additional storage with that one. I can keep the brand new one for shows. Thank you again! Bill in Wooster OH.
