Default Replacing wheel bearings ... DIY job? or dealer?

Hey guys,

My 2004 X-type 3.0 has 106k miles on it, about 7 months ago I brought my Jag into the dealership in New Orleans from a noise while turning left AND right, it was a rubbing, vibrating noise when I turned, and while going straight it was relatively quiet, but still a hum to it. So they replaced both wheel bearings under warranty ... well my warranty expired at 101k miles, and the problem came back. When I turn to the right, there is the same vibrating, rubbing, noise coming from the right side of the car (it seems). When I go straight, it is quiet, and when I turn left it is quiet. Even the slightest turn to the right, like changing lanes gradually, makes a sound. It's at all speeds, and it doesn't make too much of difference.

I don't remember how much the wheel bearings were, as they were replaced under warranty. So I'm trying to decide whether I should attempt to do this job myself, or take it to a dealer (how much would they charge?)

Thanks

I find it to be very odd this would happen again so soon. First think I suggest would be to call your dealer and let them know of this issue, there very well may be a warranty on the parts they replaced....worth checking. Even if they are not warrantied you may be able to twist some arms and get it fixed for nothing if it is indeed the same issue.

i agree with chris.

if it happened so soon, and it is indeed the bearing, and it was me.
i would think that the dealer didn't do anything but a lube job to begin with.
i would deffinently take it back to the dealer before i did anything else.

I agree with the two last posts, you should never have to do the same job twice in a year.. any reputable dealership will guarantee their work on your car for a time.. especially something like a wheel bearing. Have you checked that maybe it may be a tie rod or possibly an upper ball joint?
I dont get the noise comiong from only right turns.. if it were a bearing i would expect it to make noise both ways and quiet down driving straight...have you tried grabbing your front tired at 3 and 9 oclock and shaking it as hard as you can left to right and also grab it with both hands after at 12 oclock and push back and forth. if the first one has looseness it is a tie rod sometimes a bearing too... if it is the second test.. ball joint is the issue. Most people expect a clunk when a balljoint or tie rod is wearing out but often it will just cause a rubing sound when turning one direction...Hope that helps

I have similar issue on my XJ...turn right and noise from left front wheel area...suspect bearing.Last time I used dealer (unlimited mileage in UK) was for warranty worl and I queried if a new warranty part fails just outside of warranty period....they replied "if we fitted a gearbox on the last day of your warranty and it failed the next day (ie out of warranty) then it would not be covered".Horn and front ciggy lighter also not working and warranty period now expired!

Usually in the US replaced parts are covered for up to a year with unlimited mileage. Thats how it is with my Honda, and they are stingy ones when it comes to warranty.
