Shuddering on acceleration 55-70mph
 

Hi. I have a 2008 X Type 2.0 D which has started shuddering on acceleration, when maintaining speed the shuddering goes away but can also be felt when engine breaking.
I had it up on axle stands running and the drivers side wheel appeared to have a slight buckle in it so I swapped the wheel for the spare and the problem has not been cured.

I am suspecting it could be drive shaft/CV related but cannot see any play in it, I have had it into a garage who also cannot find anything wrong with it either, they suggest letting it get worse, however I am cautious of doing this as I dont want anything else being damaged by the vibrations/something running excentric.

Has anyone had a similar fault and got to the bottom of it?

V8Steve, if you have an AWD car, then I would be looking at the carrier bearing on the rear driveshaft. This has been known to cause vibrations in the speeds that you are talking about. If you have a FWD car, then I am not sure what to tell you.

I had something very similar which turned out to be the transmission mount.

I have had it up on lift at another garage to look at it again and the drivers side drive shaft seams to be running slightly eccentric, I've ordered a new drive shaft, hoping that solves it, clutching at straws now with it.

I'll have a look at transmission mount when it's up in air, do you know if it was an obvious failure or a crow bar job to find excessive play in it? Was your car FWD?

Check the "dogbone". This Is a mondeo replacement, but same process (and part) for the X.

UPDATE - PROBLEM SOLVED

The Culprit : Drivers side driveshaft, appears to be inner CV joint that is the problem, there is lots of backlash in the inner CV joint, everything else on the driveshaft appears to be okay.
