Default Steering Wheel Gloss Finish Flaking Off

My old X-Type is till looking pretty good but the glossy sheen on the padded steering wheel material has started flaking off.

Is there some kind of coating that can be used to rejuvenate the finish?

Thanks Dell.

I googled it up.

It seems to be a varnish for wood.

The steering wheel is made of a kind of soft foam material so a varnish that dries hard would probably crack.

I tried googling 'varathane car interior repair' but could not find anything.

Does varathane dry with a flexible finish? in which case it may work.

Soft foam? Missed it was not the wood part =

You could also use leather refinish kit

If the leather is not too torn up/worn you could use leather shoe dye followed by neutral shoe polish and a nice buffing. I've been using this method for years on leather wrapped steering wheels, worn seat bolsters, etc.. also water-based enamel paint (available at most arts and crafts) could be used.. Water-based paint is flexible.

Del's suggestion of a re-wrap kit is an excellent alternative, I restored a vintage MOMO steering wheel for my AMG Hammer coupe using one, though tedious and time consuming; The finished result was great!
