strut replacement
I need to replace my front right strut.. I've replaced struts before on different cars but for some reason on my jag it seems to be quite difficult. I unbolted all the necessary screws and bolts and the darn thing still won't come out of the tower housing.
Any advise? |
RE: strut replacement
The throw on the lower control arm of the X-Type wont allow the strut to come out of the knuckle or tower before bottoming out against the axle. It's a little more work but I always take the lower ball joint stud out of the knuckle and then CAREFULLY knock the knuckle off of the strut being very careful not to over extend the axle and pullthe boot and therefore the cv joint apart. For a first timer it may be easier to pull the axle nut and remove the outer splined cv joint out of the hub to avoid damage. This assumes you have a way to drive the splines from the hub without damageing the threads and end of the axle. They aren't usually overly seized in the hub but it will require either an air hammer or a good punch and heavy hand hammer to get the cv out of the hub. The first X-type strut I did I was cursing the designer for days. I couldn't beleive the extra work required to get the job done compared to every other strut I had done. Good luck.

RE: strut replacement
