Stuck in park
 

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some assistance. I have a 2004 X-Type 3.0, 105,000 miles. I came home, parked on my level driveway, and now it’s stuck in park. The car starts, everything works. When I put on the break I don’t hear any sounds but when I try to pull it out of park I do hear a click. I also had an error on my dash twice over the past couple of weeks that said the cruise control was not available. I don’t know if that’s related. The “P” does not blink like I’ve seen in YouTube videos. I did take off the cover on the stick shift, but I cannot see if there is a bolt on the driver side to get it out of park. I also went to get a diagnostic tool but I cannot find where to plug it in for the life of me. I am not a car expert, but I have filled around with cars a little. The check engine light is on. Another thing, my fuel cap broke about three weeks ago and I had to get a new one. That’s about when the check engine light came on, even with the new cat but never shut off. But I have noticed that it’s extremely hard to get the gas cap off when I am under a quarter of a tank of gas. These are the only problems I’m having. I’m not sure if any of them are related to being stuck in park or not but any information anyone could give me I really appreciate, thanks!!!! Renee

More likely the pedal solenoid. As you have no info in your signature nor your post, I had to DEDUCE you have an automatic transmission based on "P not blinking". There are 2 solenoids on the brake pedal. One to turn the brake lights on and power the j gate release solenoid (black/gray) and one to turn off cruise control (green). If you have the key in position 2 (not yet started) & step on the brake pedal, you should hear an audible click from the J Gate when solenoid functions.

The OBD port is on the left side of car (LHD) near the front of the dash on the left side.

I experienced this with my wife driving and parking in the driveway. First start the engine and then apply the brake then pull hard on the steering wheel to the right and try to release the gearshift. If unsuccessful try it to the left. When parking she had pressure on the wheel that wouldn't allow the release. Quick and easy to try.

To get it out of P if there's a solenoid failure, first, remove the surround to the selector lever by opening ashtray and lifting the front edge of the surround with fingertips, then ease the back edge up and lift it off. It will come off and go back on very smoothly with its four good quality clips.

With the surround off, using a torch will let you see a small black disc on the end of a shaft that goes into the J Gate on its lefthand side. This disc has a raised ridge running diagonally across its outer face. Using a suitable thin screwdriver or similar against that diagonal ridge, rotate the disc a small amount anti-clockwise (It's not tight) and hold it rotated while pulling the selector lever out of Drive.

It'll take you less than a minute the second time you do it. Maybe a little longer the first time!

Mmm. Typo by Dell I think that's a bit misleading, so to clarify. The two solenoids on the brake pedal are actually switches; one operates the brake lights and the other operates the solenoid that releases the selector lever to allow it to come out of Park.

"Torch" in this case means a FLASHLIGHT.

In the US, "torch" generally means flame.

Just figured I'd make sure everyone was on the same page in the hymnal . . .

That'll be alright if your careful. Some of us still use candles over here when the batteries are flat! That's batteries electric, not batteries cannon!!

Hey Dell, I think its a solenoid. I don’t hear that click and my break light are nit working. I’ve swapped out fuses. Ill have to look up how to change those. That’s next. Ive had the flu for a week so Im back at it.

Really easy. It's mounted on a bracket by the brake pedal. You can even remove it and bench test it to see if it's toast.

So could be that or again the actual solenoid in the J Gate (very rare), but my guess is the pedal switch particularly with no brake lights. JUST FOR SAFETY, you did check the fuse (f63 for pre 2004+ model, f2 For 2004+ models). F2 on 2004+ models also powers brake light switch, a/c & touch screen. And switch is a bit misleading, it's a "push button plunger" switch.

Note that there are two switches on the brake pedal; the lower one with the Green/White and Brown/Red wires is the brake light/gear selector solenoid switch and is the one you're after. The other one is the cancel cruise control switch.
