Unusual Noise after A/C has been on

Unusual noise after A/C has been running and vehicle is turned off. Sounds like a “casino wheel” as it winds down and eventually stops. Car is not overheating, no leaks and thermostat is not stuck. Noise doesn’t occur if A/C hasn’t been run. There are 2 fans in the X-type. One for the A/C and one for the engine. Apparently in this case the A/C one needs to be replaced at a cost of $300-$400. Anyone had this issue before? Thanks!

Welcome! I haven't actually had this problem yet. Hang tight and someone will help sometime soon...

My guess is the compressor clutch, but really need more details. Where is the noise coming from? On the engine? High or down low?

it sounds like it is coming from the fan assembly on the driver side (U.S). I don't think it is the shrowd. I've had it parked for 3 weeks as it has been very hotin Souther Californiaand didn't want to push it with the A/C. Yesterday I noticed an oil leak where the oil filter is attached. Hopefully it is just a bad gasket and not something more expensive like the oil pan gasket. Vehicle is 2004 3.0 with 70,000 miles on it. Relatively problem free except for replacing the coolant resevior at 60,000 miles.

I've heard this noise too and thought it was the climate control itself. It happened when I shut everything down, turned the car and was grabbing my thingsbefore I got out.I forget what it is called but itcould be the part that adjust the temperature. Something to do with the vacuum - I think it is normal. Is everything working properly otherwise?

aside from the small oil leak by the filter (since the car has been sitting now) it is working properly. No dash warnings, no coolant leaks or overheating and thermostat seems to be functioning properly. I've read quite a bit on the cabin fan that stays on after the car has been on, but in 4 years of ownership I've never heard this noise and it is perdominately in the front by the fan apparatus.

LOOK TO SEE IF THERE AIN'T A PAPER STICKER FROM ONE OF THE ELECTRICAL WIRES TO THE FANS THAT HASN'T COME UNDONE AND IS ACTING LIKE A CARD IN SPOKES..

Sorry for the caps..just didn't look up til I was done..[&:]

I wish it was that easy - I checked that out. My thought is that something is loose since my wife rear ended another vehicle about the time this started. No big damage except marks on the bumper (thank God for that damn license plate holder required in California)but she confessedit was a pretty good jolt. I cannot think I have to replace the entire cooling fan module!! I suppose we'll find out tomorrow when I take it in.

Oh!..well that makes sense now..you left that little detail out..LOL:D

Yeah, you get a whole new fan assembly..

Turns out the bearings are the issue. As I already know, they don't sell the components seperately so I must replace the entire cooling module assembly at $400. Oil leak turned out to be the gasket on the filter so at least that was a cheap fix!
