Probably a parts list is the way to tell. This is so rare that it may be that no-one here knows for sure.

I just try hard reset on my 04 X-Type, it doesn't work. I saw on the youtub, there a guy show that to swap the ECU without the need to reprogram it: He show that the way to do it you have to find a ECU, the instrument cluster with the black box that piggy back on top of ECU and the key; All have to be came from the same car, I want to try that, but I have not find all of them in the same car yet, some junk yards won't sale you the key unless you buy the whole car. The Jaguar dealer 30minutes from my place said the can not repair nor reprogram the ECU, they have to order a new one from Jag. factory, it will cost @$1500. I have not visit that dealer, and never will, if I can not fix it myself I will parts it.

Hello, motorcarman! ,I have a 04 X-Type, it got over heat and won't start again, after tow it home, I find out it full of water in the engine, I have to take almost every things out to clean the engine and replace the head gasket. After put every things back the engine still won't start but cranked very easily, Paul came to my house to see the car, he said probably I put the cam shaft back wrong timing. So I will have to disassembly the engine again, try to rematch the timing, it's going to to take me a while, in the mean time can I sent the ECM of my car to you so you can check it out to see if it was broke or still work? Or where would you recommence to send my ECU to inspect or repair?

There are several places that repair faulty modules. I have used Module Master for customers seat modules. Others may 'chime-in' with more suggestions.

Default Tool to remove ECM bolt of connector

Hello ECM exsperts,

Need to change ECM/BCM but having trouble removing the main connector behind right shook tower. Went to Harborfrieght and bought hollow point star bits but will not fit head of connector bolt. Where can I get a socket to fit. The recess in the head of the bolt kinda looks like a star with a post in the middle. I had the idea to match the ECM to an match BCM then take the miss matched set out and put in the matched set from a junk yard car. My thought is that both will agree with each other and believe it is a different vin # the rest of the sensors should not know the difference,. Last ditch attempt to make a good running car can't justify 3000 Jag wants to correct the problem. I tried to sell it at the junk yard auctions no bids over 900.

You cannot just swap modules in modern cars. The modules are on a network and need to be configured to each other and to the car.
Some modules cannot be configured to another car once configured to a particular car.

You need to do some reading about configuring modules in Jaguars.

Good luck

Hello Jag Form,

I changed my ECM / BCM with one from the used part network. I matched the part #s to be sure to get the corrected ones. Now car wont crank. I was just told the the problem is with the KEY NOT MATCHED I was also told that I have to have 2 keys to get them programmed. What are your feeling on the no crank situation and a new key from Jag is $348. plus 150 for programming.. I am looking for more justification to spend the money. 2004 X-Type 3.0

Hello Question for the forum

Changed BCM and ECM to a matched set from junk yard. Car won't crank everything else seems to work. Took car to Jag dealer to have keys reprogrammed but still wont crank. Any ideas. Car ran before changing out computers. Jag dealer checking to see what is wrong.

if you have read through this post you are now aware of what motrcarman and i have been saying about what can happen. You have kiiled the car and probobly not recoverable without alot more money spent. Bcm ecu and only 2 of the many modules that have the vin programmed into them. Tcm ddm pdm abs i pack ac module etc. When you have a vin mismatch the other modules will no longer talk to them because they dont know them which is why it is best practice to always start with a new module and program(marry) to the car. X types are very bad about having faults with the instrument packs that contain the security and key data. Have seen many x types that keys were lost, or rying to program keys which erases the old keys and then the new keys wont program. Requiring a new instrument pack and occassional a new ecu too. This basically totals a xtype.
Swapping in used modules most often corrupts the vid block which contrains all the vehicle info and for lack of a better term. Makes a car a nice brick. you only saving grace would be to swap the old parts back in and if the vid block is not corrupt you can program keys back into instrument pack and itll start.

Hello gentlemen,
I trailed the car to a different Jag dealer. They tried to reprogram the Key and found that did not fix the no crank issue. They went in for another hour charge and fixed the car. When I paid the $276.00
I asked the service manager and he said the problem was in the ECM and they reprogrammed it and fixed the car. Now here is my take on this I asked the dealer in Troy Mi if they would reprogram the ECM to match the BCM and what ever else was needed. They flat said not possible and I would have to pay 1000 for a new ECM and it program. Farmingtin Hills Jag was able to fix it with 1 hour charge. If there was no place else to go hell would freeze over before I went to any of the dealers owned by the same company that owns Troy. I am going to hold the name because I don't want to slam anyone. It is me lesson learned. My wife and I are going to pray about what to do with the XTYPE we have entertained trading it in on a used Cadillac CTS
