Water pump?
I am having a problem and not sure if it's my water pump. Thoughts?
The car runs fine. It does not overheat. However, it leaks antifreeze when running. I can leave it parked for a week and not one drip on the ground. If I start it up, I notice antifreeze on the ground after 15 mins. Does it sound like the water pump is leaking? I would assume it's that, but the car is not overheating at all and the temperature holds steady. That's why I'm questioning it. Also, wouldn't the water pump leak all the time, not just when running? Thanks! |
Could be your thermostat or the 'T' pipe that connects it and the rest of the lines. Mine was the exact same way.

Typically, if your water pump is leaking, you'll see antifreeze coming from the pump itself.
If it is a water pump, the one on the X-Type is super-easy to replace. Although it is the only car I've ever seen with the water pump on the back of the engine, and driven off the camshaft! |
fisherman, when the water pump is leaking, if you look behind the battery, you will see the top of the tranny. If your water pump is leaking, it will collect coolant on top of the tranny. If you don't see coolant there, then odds are, the leak is not coming from your water pump.

Leak
FYI I had a similar scenario. Try this, with the engine at operating temperature open the hood and have someone rev the engine about 3,000 and watch around between the radiator and the fan, that long pipe is plastic there has a tendency to crack and open up at high throttle and never leak any other time. Also the reservoir tank pipe cracks and leaks at high rpm.

Thanks for all of the info. I have been real busy at work. I will check it out as soon as I can.
Thanks! |
Thermo is right, you have to get a very bright flash light, run the engine to the operated temp. look under engine to see where is coolant drip down, the try to trace to where is coolant came out; Because if water pump is leak it will leaked right after engine is running, but if the hoses or gasket leak ( small leak) it will happen when engine is hot and pressure build up, some time it hard to detect because the leak at one point but coolant sprayed to the other point.
