Trunk Opening Spring-Things

Trunk Opening Spring-Things
When we got our '03 X-Type, one of the Trunk Opening
Spring-Things was missing, the other in place. So, down to
the dealer I go and plunk down my money for a new Trunk
Opening Spring-Thing and I look at the one that is still in
place and put in its mate in exactly the same way.
Still, the trunk won't open up by it self at all. I mean
nothing. Like they weren't even there. Now the way my
Trunk Opening Spring-Things are installed, it looks for all
the world like they don't press on anything, which would
explain the trunk not opening situation. If I take them
out, there is no difference in the operation of the trunk.
I think now that maybe they are in wrong. Remember, one was
missing and I used the extant one as a model of how to
install the new one. The JTIS Manual diagrams don't even
show the Trunk Opening Spring-Things. If they are installed
upside down or on the wrong side, I have no way to tell.
All I can say for sure is that they are symmetrical and
installed exactly as the one that came in the car was installed.
So, if someone would be so kind as to take a photo of the
linkage in his trunk with the Trunk Opening Spring-Things
installed correctly, I'd greatly appreciate it
Thanks,

RE: Trunk Opening Spring-Things
The Trunk Opening Spring-Things I am talking about are about an inch and a half long and about an inch in diameter. They are made of black plastic and clip onto the trunk (okay, okay, boot) lid hinge. They have a piston and a strong spring that can be pushed into the cylinder maybe three-quarters of an inch. I am not talking about the long black gas cylinders that keep the trunk from opening too far and also assist in lifting the trunk lid.

RE: Trunk Opening Spring-Things
they are there to make sure the trunk opens just a mm or two, so that when you push the release button, it does not re-latch. they ARE there to deal with openeing,, not closing.
There are other bumpers to deal with closing.
i would say the easiest thing to do is to go to a dealer and open the trunk of a car in the showroom.. and take a look.
