Which wheels are these

Hi all,

In January this year I was lucky enough to score an 2003 X-Type Indianapolis in Ultraviolet (great colour0 with only 24,500 KILOMETRES on it. 2.5 litre AWD, etc, etc

I paid $15,900 for it (I live in Australia) and this price is pretty damn good considering the new price was $81K and that that a nearly dealer has two of this year model in stock with 45K and 65K on them for prices of $24K and $27K. Obviously private prices are lower but I haven't been able to find one of these with anywhere near the K's on mine.

It had had a rear end shunt but this was fixed up (NOT a repairable write-off). Since I bought it I have travelled 5,000km in it and it has not missed a beat within the exception of one of the driver's seat motors failing. I sourced a new seat base and will be getting it fitted soon.

it is comfortable, feels like it is glued to the road and very quiet. I get around 8l/100 km on highways. Around town though, with short trips up to 5 - 10 km it's only getting around 12-13.5l/100 m which seems a bit much to me, but I'll put up with it.

Apart from that all I have done is put a leaper on the bonnet and replaced the sound system because it wouldn't play mp3s of which I have a large collection of old time radio shows.

Anyway, the reason for this post.

Two of the original 18" wheels were badly scratched and marked and I took up the previous owner's offer to replace the wheels with a set of 17" that he had. two reasons were the price differential between 17" and 18" wheels and because I felt the 17" would give me a less harsh ride than the 18".

The spare of those is pretty badly marked and I am tossing up whether to have it restored or replace it. Probably replace it as a couple of the bits of damage probably won't be able to be fixed.

Can anyone tell me the name/model of these wheels (picture attached). I found one site that told me they were "X-Sport" wheels, a factory option.

Thanks for any help or comments anyone can make.

Cheers from Australia.

Hi Back.

Congrats on the new ride. You'll love it.

The build sheet on my '03 calls these "Flute" wheels, in North America anyway.

There are a couple of threads on this site about repairing/refinishing alloy wheels with excellent results.

mohrd 05-21-2014 11:56 PM

Those wheels are the "Aguila" that came as the standard 17" on the Sport in the early model years.

Has anyone thought to do a thread on the different factory wheel options available? I'm just interested to see what other versions are out there. I quite like the look of the Webber edition wheels.

Probably my mistake but this is what I was referring to. 18" Cayman perhaps?

That image you included is exatly what I was looking for (well sort of, I had imagined photos but that adequately covers it)

Aonsaithya 05-22-2014 05:22 AM

Ah, I updated my post with some spacing to make it clear which wheel group is which size. The size is in the top left corner of each group.

Those are 16" Antares wheels. The 18" ones you referred to have small boltheads around the rim.

great information

What great info you guys have given anyone who reads this post- top stuff.
comparing my wheels with the photos/diagrams provided it looks like mine are the x sports. Maybe they were known by other names in some markets.
the indianapolis wheels looked pretty good, well the undamaged ones anyway, looked pretty damn good but as the owner was saying they would be a royal pain to clean.
thanks all

Aonsaithya 05-22-2014 06:48 AM

I seem to recall that the Indianapolis wheels have a polished stainless steel "lip", or edge of rim, which is extremely difficult to fix if it gets scratched. Also, if I remember correctly, while the Indianapolis (and Melbourne, maybe Proteus) look like two-piece wheels, some if not all are actually just cast single-piece wheels and the boltheads around the rim are fakes, and also extremely hard to replace if something happens to them.

So, while they look nice, they may become a maintenance nightmare.

mohrd 05-22-2014 12:48 PM

IIRC, both the Melbourne and Indianapolis wheels are two piece and made by BBS. Both are very nice but kind of rare outside the UK. Of course I still think the 18" Proteus is THE best looking factory wheel.

Aonsaithya 05-22-2014 01:38 PM

Speaking of Proteus wheels, I wonder what's the story behind these?
Jaguar Proteus 18 inch Alloy Wheels
The description says "Proteus-style". They used to be available in black too.

I'm kind of happy with both my wheels sets, the 16" are the X10s which I think are the nicest 16" wheels, while the 17" are the Bermudas which again are in my eyes the nicest X-Type wheels overall.

Btw slightly off topic, my trip computer tells me I get around 12.6-12.9L/100km. I'm on 89 octane pseudo-premium fuel in my 3.0X-Type. Yours should get closer to 11-11.5 shouldn't it?

My 2005 X-Type VDP has them, which means they were probably part of the VDP package here in the US. Mine are 17 inch.

They are Antares, not Andros/Belize...not only do they look rather different, Antares has 15 spokes while Andros/Belize has 12.

Aonsaithya;

You're right. Jeez, I can't even count!

I tried to delete my post, but the best I could do was editing it to nothing.

Sorry.

Robert Scott Neilly 05-23-2014 06:56 AM

Original question......

OK, Guys, but now I'm a bit confused. The Wheels and Tyres Fitment Guide, as well as the Build List for my car, list the wheels pictured in Aussie3's original post as "Flute" wheels. Am I right?

Sorry.

Nobody died nor was injured; don't worry, it's alright :D

I've seen those called Aguila, Fluted and X-Sport without any real consistency. The drawings I posted and the names in them are from Jaguar's part catalogue.

Robert Scott Neilly 05-23-2014 08:50 AM

And yet the Diagram supplied by Aonsaithya calls them "X-Sport" ?? I give up. Really doesn't matter anyhoo.

aussie3 05-24-2014 05:57 AM

thanks for the info

Talk about diverse opinions!?!?
Thanks to everyone for the various opinions and talk.
You're right that it doesn't really matter except when I'm trying to source some wheels over the phone and all I can rely on is a description and name/style.
I think I'll go with the x sport name seeing as the names were on an original Jag drawing.

This 2nd hand parts shop is a fairly good source for wheel photos, for identifying purposes:
