X-type diesel with rough idle.
 

Hi,

My X-type 2,0 diesel -05 with 120.000 miles on the clock has a rough idle when hot. When the engine is cold, it runs on about 900 rpm and the idle is fine, but when the engine gets hot, it drops to about 750 rpm and the idle gets rough, resulting in a "chewing" sound.

Apart from this the car runs very well. Engine feels crisp, fuel consumption is normal (about 50 imp MPG) and no black smoke (EGR valve was changed last year).

I have tried the best diesel injector cleaner I know about, Red Line 85 plus, which seemed to help a little bit, but the rough idle is still there.

Has anybody heard about this before and know what to do about it?

Another thing. Apart from having a rough idle, there is a noice. It is a "chewing" and sometimes "rattling" noice. The noice disappear when the clutch is pressed down. The noice also disappear when the idle is increased to 1000 rpm.

I have thought of a possibility. Could it be the dual mass flywheel? It seems to be a common problem on the diesels.

Would a fawlty dual mass flywheel fit into the description? Rattle and vibrations at idle, but gets better when the clutch is pressed down or when the idle is incleased to 900 rpm.

Somebody must know about this as it seems to be a common problem.

Hi Tor,

The noise you describe sounds like the DMF, does the clutch peddle pulse under your foot ?
Its quite an expensive repair, if it falls apart the debris can damage your starter motor too.

You may benefit from getting the latest software update for your ECU too, had mine done recently. It sorted out the 'hot start stumble' some diesels suffer from and had the added bonus of improving the economy as well.

Expensive you say. Is the work very labour intensive or are the parts also expensive?

How difficult would it be to change the flywheel if I try to do it myself? I understand I would need to get the gearbox out. Anybody knows if this means taking the engine out as well or could the gearbox be taken out from under the car?

My local garage may have found the problem. They said it could be the EGR valve being stuck, they released the vacum hose and blowed into the valve, and for now it seems the car is running normal.

Does this make any sense?

I have had the fault diagnosed by a Jaguar specialst. They say it is not the dual mass flywheel. Due to them it is simply the car running rough at idle, for some reason.

A strange thing. The car now runs fine when the engine is hot. If I drive the car for a longer journey, say 50 miles, it idles normal afterwords. If I leave the car to cool down and start it again after a couple of hours, the idle is rough again.

Any idea what could be the reason?

Sounds like the EGR valve might be sticking, or possibly the idle control valve.

I've blanked my EGR valve off with a little blanking plate I found on ebay... solves the issue of trying to replace it :)

The car will always run best when hot. Depending on what the temperature is where you are it may affect the idle especially on start up. Cold temps make diesels very rough on idle.
