X-Type False Coolant Overheat Problem

Gentlemen;
My first time posting here...appreciate any input. First of all, there should be a special place in Purgatory for the present generation of automotive engineers...I never cease to be amazed at the whacky things that are now commonplace.
My question is one I've seen on the web over and over, but the answer never is to the point. Apparently, many people have experienced X-Types having the temp gauge pegging...after shut down and restart, all is normal, so obviously a sensor issue. I've been told there are two temp sensors...the ECT or Engine Coolant Sensor near the thermostat,and some other I can't find. I replaced the ECT. I see there is an ECM input from an Engine Oil Temp sensor or EOT. I have also read about a temperature 'sender'. In years past, a sender was simply a bimetallic element that opened or closed a circuit, or was a thermistor or similar device. What exactly have you guys been finding as to the cause? Is the second temp sensor the EOT, or is there a 'sender' per se?? Is this 'sender' a preamp module or something? The schematic I've found indicates all sensors go to the ECM and from there to the gauge. If there is a 'sender', where the heck is it located?? Any input most appreciated...
Joe
