x-type gearbox fault
 

Hello

I have a 2005 jag x type that always seems to act up in wet weather. It snowed here yesterday and on a short drive I got the gearbox fault message with a red light, the battery light and a check engine light.

The codes are P0915, P1642 and P0443, any help om this subject would be greatly appreciated

Jim,

Saw your Intro post and it sounds like you need this info fast. I've zero direct knowledge on X-Type but can give you the code details from the Jaguar DTC Manual:

P0443: EVAP canister purge valve circuit malfunction
P0915: J Gate signal failure
P1642: CAN circuit malfunction

You won't find much at all on the P0915, so I'll give you my story.

I started getting this same code shortly after I bought my X. It was definitely more prevalent in warm/humid weather, and I know there was a secondary code too which could have been a P1642, I can't remember exactly. I was resetting my OBD codes every 2 - 3 days during this period.

I went down so many paths to fix this, tore apart the J-gate and tested the switches, tested the hall effect sensor, thought maybe cell phone could be interfering with the 5-to-4 hall effect sensor so tried keeping it away from the shifter, readjusted the linkages per JTIS, pulled the TCM and inspected all the connections, ziploc baggied the unit anyway. At some point during all that I went crazy enough that I made the error message my avatar here.

It wasn't until I started pinning out the harness from the J-gate to the TCM (and elsewhere) that I discovered a wire that was being pinched by the tilt steering column. All I did was move the steering column up a couple of inches and I got continuity again. I spliced the break and have not seen the Gearbox Fault since, about 15 months.

At first I was mad at the dealer for selling me a car that very clearly couldn't go more than 25 miles between CEL resets with this code, but then I realized it was most likely my fault when I bought the car. What's one of the first things you do when you buy a new car? Play with all the controls and get everything the way you like it, right? I am sure that as soon as I moved the steering column, probably on my very first drive from home, I caused the problem myself. :icon_gunhead:

Hey I see you have had the same code I have! I have been driving with the P0915 code on as well as the red exclamation point light! Car runs beautifully just light will not go away many places have said the code doesn't exist in 03 x-types so wanted to get some of your opinions! Don't wanna go to the dealer and say its a "dummy code" for $129 an hour! Would greatly appreciate the input!

Ih a ve bee n getting the battery light on and gearbox fault and alternator and battery issues. The aftermarket stereo put in inherent And alternator died in one day at At firstifault but it turns out it has a lot to do with the very first cable so I'm replacing that ground wires I was getting cold is well in cluding p1000 so anyway I still want to speak on that please let me know I go over here in one day

So I originally thought it was system. Tuns out no. Batt light engine light gearbox default ac started blowing hot and batt died next day I discover that 2 day alt dead ive benn advised replace batt earth cable and grounds. And so I guess we sh as ll see
