X-Type Misfire
I live in Qatar and have an X Type 2002.
It is running rough/misfiring, and often the warning message "Cruise Not Available" appears (the cruise control has never worked since I bought it 7 years ago!). It is slightly worse when it is cold. If I try to accelerate too quickly the engine loses power until I lift my foot slightly. My friendly local mechanic has looked at plugs, injectors and I have replaced all 4 Oxygen sensors. Has anyone any ideas? Many thanks |
I just had the same thing. Mass Air Flow sensor. Easy to swap out, but first try MAF cleaner (no other type of cleaner).

Thanks Sone,
My mechanic has replaced the mass air flow sensor (or says he has). I will try the "MAF cleaner", and I also suspect there may be an air leak or a petrol leak somewhere. Regards, Mike |
You really need to get an OBD reader and pull the codes and look them up here in the search function. Guessing will get you nowhere fast and cost lots of money. If MAF was replaced, unless it was a long time ago, there's no need to clean it.
Type of engine (petrol/diesel), size, year helps, too. Any lights on the dash illuminated? |
@Dell:
What is a good ODB reader, price, model type etc? And the list with the code numbers, are the numbers the same for arr models / type cars? Or where to find. |

I suspect that my mechanic replaced the wrong sensor (coolant temperature rather than MAF) as he has quoted the wrong part number. Theses things happen here in Qatar!! Car is petrol, 3 litre, 2002 model. Regards, Mike |
I have cleaned the MAF sensor - not much difference
I borrowed an OBD 2 scanner and 3 codes came up P0306 Cylinder 6 misfire detected P1314 misfire catalyst damage bank no. 2 P1316 misfire rate above limit Does that give any clues as to what is wrong Thanks - Mike |
Welcome to the forum Mike,
Here's the relevant extract from the Jaguar DTC lookup for your codes giving the list of possible causes: https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...ab8eea99c7.jpg Members with the same model will know better than I do which is the most likely culprit. Graham |
Thanks Graham
i hope it is just a spark plug, coil or injector problem as the others sound expensive! |
#1 suspect would be a coil
with those other codes I'd be worried to fix it soon before a cat needs replacing! |
^^yup, yup, when it says Catalytic converter damage, it happens INCREDIBLY fast. A former member here for years (left because of a mod) damaged his in what he reported was driving it about 10-12 blocks total.
