Has anyone taken off their engine cover?
I dont need to do it on our XE as it is a 4 potter, but a number of f type owners (me included) have taken it off to enjoy the supercharger whine.
Look at the threads in the f type forum if you are interested, but essentially the temperature is lower under the bonnet if it is removed rather than hotter. I can hear the supercharger whine until about 3500 rpm when the sound of the exhaust takes over, but maybe in the XE with the quieter exhaust the whine will be stronger. It isnt a full on scream or anything, but if you like a bit of noise it should make you smile. To take the engine cover off, you essentially just lift it, as it sits on little plugs. The engine isnt very attractive without the cover. |
Pretty much the first thing I did. Saves weight, lowers the engine temps a tiny bit. I like the look of the aluminum engine over some plastic cover any day, but that's me. Went in for a service interval without it, they seemed to care not....

Taking engine cover off is must-do for any kind of track use. It traps quite a bit of heat and greatly contributes to heat soak. AJ engine deals with this by adjusting timing and cutting power.

F Type SVRs, the Project 7 and 8 cars actually all come without the cover from factory....That in itself tells you what the in house Special Vehicle performance guys think of the engine cover...

Yes since day one. Why wouldn't you?

do you notice the whine more? i do in the f type but it gets drowned out by the exhaust

Is there any marking or wear on the sound deadening directly under the hood from the extra heat it's giving off?

It would very much surprise me if there would be a temperature issue for the hood. On an F Type SVR there is just a minimal patch and the rest of the hood is left bare. The gap between hood and engine is also much smaller on the F Type. |
So how do I take it off? I'll post pics for future reference since they don't seem to exist online. Can't find a picture of the xe35t engine bay without a cover on it.

Breeze to take off. Maybe a little more whine, no changes otherwise. Definitely not suddenly annoying. Looks great though.
