Default 2012 XF Portfolio Differential Oil Change

Changed the oil in the differential of my 2012 XF Portfolio this morning. This is an easy driveway job, although I did it in my garage. You need an 8mm hex key for the fill plug, a 3/8in square drive key for the drain plug and a container to collect the old oil, and new 70W90 gear oil --I used Castrol Syntec Synthetic Gear Oil for the new fill.
Make sure the fill plug is free before you drain the old oil.

Remove fill plug using 8mm hex key.

Remove drain plug with 3/8 square drive key. Make sure you have a container handy to collect approx 850ml of old oil.

8mm hex key, drain and fill plugs and new oil. Clean and replace drain plug before adding new oil.

Pumping 850 ml of new oil into differential. Then replace fill plug.

Old oil ready for disposal.

I'm about to do this on my 2011. Fill until it drips out like any other vehicle? No other checks required or weirdness involved?

Absolutely not. You have to measure out 850ml and put it in----it is below the the bottom of the fill plug hole. According to the Service Manual filling from dry requires 900ml but refilling after draining you only require 850ml. I actually measured what drained out and it was about 850ml. I used the scale on the bottle to measure the correct amount.

Ahhh...so it's not designed for simplicity. I'll make sure to bring my pipette

Thanks much!

As far as I know your XFR has a LSD with an electric clutch. The drain plug is in a similar location, but the fill plug is on the front drivers side of the diff. The specification and quantity of gear oil is different----drain and fill quantity is 1250ml( as in 1.25l). I am not familiar with the gear oil spec but others who know have used Royal Purple 75W90.

Actually, one more dumb question. I read through this guy:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...change-105611/

And it sounds like the recommendation from there is M2C192A fluid, a 75w140 weight. That's on an earlier car, but there was quite the discussion about 140 or 90 weight. I don't have the service manual; why did you choose the 75w90?

Because that is the spec in the in the Service Manual for both 5.0 XF and XFR cars. The 2009 cars had the old style differentials similar to S-Type and XJ cars and the spec was M2C192A which as you say is 75W140. I used the Ford version of that oil in my S-Type and XJ differentials. I posted about that about 8 years ago.

If you check out the HandBook Download sticky above and go to post#29 you can download a Service Manual.

Right on! I've been looking for a service manual for a while now, thanks!

75w90 it is!

If it is a real 2010 XFR then you need 1250ml of 75W90.

Thanks mate, as far as I'm aware its a real xfr. Do they make fake ones ? It's got the grills, all the badges, inside badges, emblem on the seats, B&W sound system and goes like a rocket ship.

Any ideas about timing chains on them ?

Not really. My car has about 50k kms and the chain is tight. If your engine has been well maintained and the chain is still tight it should be OK.

I have a 2014 XJR with the E-Diff. There are a number of fluids that are approved but check them to be sure because these diffs use carbon clutch packs and require a special fluid.

Here is my thread on my 2014 XJR with the E-diff. I used Redline 75W90 #57904.
