Am I insane?
Am just gathering the parts to go through the cooling system on my high-mileage (140k+) 2011 XF which is in beautiful shape - other than the usual Jaguar maladies...
It also needs to have the timing tensioners/guides replaced as they've been making a racket for the last 18 months
Query: Since I've got a bunch of things pulled apart anyway for the cooling system bits - does it make any sense at all for me to do the tensioners/guides at the same time while I'm in there, or are the 2 jobs really separate? (And is the tensioner/guide job best left to the professionals?)
Love the car, but don't want to dump a fortune into something with this kind of mileage -

What engine is fitted to your vehicle?
It would be best to have the primary and auxiliary timing chains, tensioners and associated parts replaced first as failure can destroy the engine.

If you have the time, patience and tools, you can replace them yourself. As you point out, paying someone to do it isn't cost effective.
Read through the other threads on this forum so you know what's involved if you decide to do the job yourself.
If your wife agrees to getting another car, that may be the better choice on many levels.

I'm about $1,000 in to get the timing parts and the tools necessary to do the job myself. I'm only doing the tensioners/guides. You have to remove the radiator to get the crank pulley out, so doing it while you're going to have the coolant drained anyway makes sense.
My wife was less than pleased with me dumping money into my car as well

I guess the big question is whether the 2 jobs get done simultaneously or not. I always hate pulling the same parts off twice if I can avoid it -

I'll pull things apart next weekend and see how I feel about diving in deeper - you'll have to post your experiences here so I can judge how brave I am to tackle those guides/tensioners...
