Are you familiar with the phrase "second thoughts are always best"?

Sorry all, that was my BMW obsessed buddy that typed that in

He admittedly thinks that BMW's are all around better than Jaguars.. I disagree and love my jag!

I personally think BMW's are so vanilla lately and all look the same...

I think it's funny that people buy M5's for their higher track potential, but then have to deal with the harder edged car day to day. And if it's not a primary car, seems that one would buy a much more sporty car ie 911, M3, XK, etc. if track was important. I've seen a few reviews that put the XFR as a better street car but the track always moves it down vs. the M5. I don't know about you, but I drive mine on the street. If I didn't, I wouldn't want a heavy 4 door car to wrestle around a track anyway. M5 seems like a jack of all trades, master of none. My 2 cents...

Glad your buddy is picking up BMW. Exclusivity is one of the many reasons I bought my XFR over the M5. Bimmers are a dime a dozen where I live. They tend to be what I call "aspirational cars". Meaning as soon as somebody reaches middle management, they automatically decide to get a BMW. More power to them and your buddy. I see at least 5-7 BMWs each day on the way to work. I think I see another XF once every two or 3 weeks and another XFR about once every 2-3 months! I pull into the garage at work and there are Benz and BMWs everywhere. Only other Jag is a guy with a XJ and I love it. Tell your friend you'll be happy to drive him to the BMW dealership when it's time for him to pick up his M5 and to stay off our forums!!

My take:

M5: Better made car, particularly with respect to interior finish and also finish on 'hidden' areas such as inside of trunk, etc. Faster than XFR or XFR-S (marginal difference in the real world). Superior transmission, but not by much over the new ZF 8 speed. Superior suspension wrt body control on rough roads to XFR (this was a big surprise to me) with decent comfort, but XFR-S claws some of this back. Fantastic power and torque. Turbo lag very minimal but still noticeable.

XFR/S - Better looking car IMO. More exclusive, fwiw. Superior power/torque delivery. Engine sound MILES better. Handling more responsive to throttle (for instance, much better ability to adjust cornering line) - this to me was a surprisingly big difference - do you like a car that feels welded to the road or one that breathes on the road and includes the driver more in the experience? Brakes no significant difference from M5.

Re: track potential of a 4200 lb. sedan, what a pointless topic, typically perpetuated by armchair experts, totally agree with Kyanite. Anyone who spends any decent amount of hobby time at a track will understand...

Thanks for the write-up..

I personally don't TRACK. I use it as a daily driver.. Just wanted luxury, performance and exclusivity...

Loving my JAG!

Funny stuff from your bud.

BMWs are great cars, sybarite nailed it on the head though in that they are pretty much the go-to vehicle for mid level management. I test drove a 550i MSport when I was trying on different cars before the Jag and there is just nothing super special about most of their vehicles. They don't get noticed because everyone has one and they all mostly look the same. The M3 and M5 are obviously in a different class but IMO they are definitely too track tuned for a comfortable daily driver. My brother had an E92 M3 and that car was awesome, looked incredible but it beat him up in day to day driving in the DC area. He traded it on a prestige package S4 and he and I both liked it better.

Correction...James Bond drives an Aston Martin, Austin Powers drives a Shaguar Baby and Pierce Brosnan drove some BMW's in some not so great Bond movies. Just being factual here guys.

Technically, James Bond briefly drove an XJL when he rescued "M" in Skyfall...but promptly swapped into an Aston.
