Brake Calipers
 

Was looking to change the colours of my brake callipers, which one is better in your opinion, just painting them or is spending the extra money to remove them and powder coat them form a professional worth it?

Also any colour suggestions?

Its a white & black tone on the car, and wanted to paint them before I got the new rims on them - think the rusted look will really stick out once those are put on.

I had mine sprayed. About 3 years ago. Still look like new. So my experience is that a good spray is terrific

I also put on a decal with an S to match my supercharged badges. Others have done similar. You can get them on eBay pretty cheaply.

Thanks, that looks great! Would you remember what brand of paint you used that lasted 3 years? Seems worth just spraying it for sure it in that case.

I unfortunately don’t know the brand as I had a wheel specialist shop do it. They charged $300 for all four wheel incl removing the old pads and rotors and putting on new ones I had all round. So it didn’t seem worth trying to do it myself

I don’t think it was anything special - a standard high temp caliper paint. clean the components thoroughly, spray 2-3 coats (thin to get a good finish). Once dry after a few hours I think the instruction was to put on the decals then spray the clear coat over the top. Being careful not to get the clear coat too wet so the decals weren’t damaged
Then 24-48 hours to fully dry and harden.

Good luck. Just one person opinion but given how easy mine was and how long it has lasted I would definitely give it a try

I've spray can painted the calipers on so many cars so many times now I've lost count, including three Jags. You can DIY it for peanuts, the cost of one can of high-temp caliper paint, and a bit more if you want decals and clear coat. I have found that if you buy good quality decals (eg supergraphicsf1) you don't even need the clear coat and they last for years with no issues.
The paint brands I have used are DupliColour and VHT, no problems with either of them.

Any suggestions on what colour would suit the black and white car.

With your black wheels black painted calipers would be pretty much invisible.
I would go with red, it seems to go with almost any colour car or wheels, I have tried blue, black and yellow and in the end I have always come back to red.

I recently did my calipers in grey, they look better than when they were rusted but not sure if I want them to stand out more or not, thinking I may go red too. I cleaned them with a drill with wire brush attachments and then just hand painted them with 2 coats of high temp paint. I also stuck on a decal but the wrong way round!! I need to replace them anyway as I've updated my badges to the newer style S ones as my old one had faded and peeled a bit.

I did mine with a Duplicolor brush on kit. Used a couple cans of brake clean and a wire brush to get them clean. Painted them on the car. They look good - a couple brush marks but nothing you notice standing a foot or two away from the car. I probably missed a couple spots on the backside, but eh.... I'll never see it.
i have decals to put on but haven't gotten around to it.

Really made the car look better (I think).

One thing to consider, is if you choose to powder coat your calipers, you'll have to remove them completely, purge the brake fluid, and then do a complete refill/bleed the system, upon reassembly. Could be a LOT of work.


Having said that, I simply cleaned my calipers and painted them using a "sponge" brush, and silver Rust Oleum paint.
