New exhaust or muffler delete?
 

Ive seen these kits like mina or spires and of course searched this forum but my thought is, wouldnt taking out the muffler and going with straight pipes be better/the same as far as replacing the current mufflers with one of these kits in excess of $700 and be a heck of a lot cheaper in the process?

Typically you go for one of these systems for sound so how would having no muffler in the way not be better than a "high performance" muffler?

Have you ever heard a car with no muffler? It will be crazy loud and obnoxious. And you might even lose some performance in parts of the powerband due to the lack of backpressure.

I have to disagree with Kryanite here. Paramount makes a system for the XF's that are literally axle back straight pipes. Taking off the mufflers does not remove the resonators which is where a lot of the sound deadening comes from. It is by no means quiet, but you're not going to be losing performance.

I emailed Paramount and this is the axle back system. I have reached out to a guy I know that does custom fabricating of exhausts. I am guessing it will be under $300 to get this same setup. This is an image for the axle back straight pipes:

Thor, you are absolutely correct if you leave the two resonators in place, it will be acceptable, but loud. Sorry for the confusion.

It depends on what engine you have.


I've had a paramount back end system on a 4.2NA (which retained mufflers but they were smaller, not a lot bigger than the pipes) and it was perfect for the 4.2. It gave a really nice Aston sound but retained the throbbiness of the 4.2, with zero drone. I put it on to my 5.0NA when I got it and it didn't sound anywhere near as good, it was quite raspy and metallic.


I've now (with the XKR 5.0 SC) done the resonator delete with an X pipe. It sounds great when you put your foot down, very little drone (maybe a touch if the car is say in 5th but should be in 4th at low revs), but has more of a howl about it than a throb. Everyone loves it, but I still think the 4.2 with the paramount exhaust sounded better.

You're correct. When I emailed them, they said that it was a 4.2 Supercharged that is in the video.

Well that would be perfect since I have a 4.2 SC. Thanks for the input guys. I mean it made sense to me but then again I dont have that much experience with this specifically. I know someone who can fabricate that paramount kit so it would probably be even less than $300.

I want it to sound tougher for sure and want the quad tip look. Im only looking to either remove or gut the last mufflers and leave everything in front of the last bend intact.

So if they sell something thats exactly what Im looking to do, I guess theres really no harm in doing it.

So I did it, have had it for a while now and it does sound great. Exactly what I wanted from the outsiders perspective. However inside the cabin there is a drone at low RPM's going around 20 mph and going around 80 mph on the highway. In between those speeds its not bad but for long trips and leaving my neighborhood it can get annoying.

Has anyone ever used sound deadening sheets to correct this? Would this work?

There is a lot of space above the pipes now with the mufflers gone so my idea was to stick a few sheets up in that area and hopefully quiet the cabin drone a bit. Maybe even under the spare tire as well.

Other than this minor issue it sounds awesome and I get compliments on it all the time.

I am absolutely dumbfounded that Paramount wants $1,200 US for a pair of pipes with an exhaust tip on them! WTF!?

No doubt! It's insane that they think they can charge that.

Car sounds great. Did you just take it to and exhaust shop and say "use these tips and put a straight pipe in"?

Removed Mufflers - tested for a few days
 

Hey,

I removed my mufflers on my 2014 XJ Supercharged 5.0, which surprisingly unclip and just 1 bolt to loosen on each side, 5 minutes later they are off. I drove it and although it growled beautifully like you'd expect from the Supercharged V8, it was just a bit too loud for sustained driving, and there would be minor vibration of the air vents in back seats (of course this is where the pipes ended), so maybe that would go away by putting on straight pipes to the back of car, but I wouldn't plan on it.

SO HERE IS WHERE I WAS SURPRISED - as I'd come off the line at a stop light, or floor it getting on the freeway onramp, the amazing sound aside, it felt NOTICABLY slower than with the mufflers. I spoke with my Exhaust specialists and they confirmed that this can be caused by a loss of backpressure, meaning I'm losing power in the lower RPM's. Not ideal for your average cruising around town. I was depressed by how noticable it was. So I'll put them back on, test it real quick, perhaps I'll do a quick time to 100mph getting on the freeway with them off and then again with them on and see what that looks like, or some 0-60mph times, but I'm certain it's slower.

WHAT's NEXT - so I just want a little more of that growl, besides only hearing it when I floor it, as the stock exhaust does. Thinking next step might be to just lose that middle resonator, see that that does, then possible lose the front resonator and replace that one with an X-Pipe, and leave the stock mufflers on. This should only cost about $240 through my guys, and although I hope it give a little more power along with a throatier sound, I'm just after the sound primarily. Does anybody have experience trying this, or suggestions of alternate options that you'd suggest I try?

Justin, just removed my center section on my xfr and installed a x pipe its a little louder notice more when the trans down shifts ($250 total cost). I am going to euro toys Wednesday to get my crank pulley and tune put in. it does seem to wind up a little faster. think in fall im going after a quick silver axel back
