Default Not good news

This doesn't help Jaguar win against Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes.

That's surprising ,I expected something more successive .I assume bumpers should protrude a few inches / centimeters off the body that would provide a better protection .

Default More fundamental

It's the fact that the underlying structure is so old - essentially the "S-Type" - that's the problem. It's physically not up to the same standard as BMW or Mercedes. Allied to which BMW and Mercedes have more modern electronic safety aids that are integrated into the total control system for the car. If you;re in the market and concerned about safety 5*'s these days is price of entry, so Jaguar should absolutely make this a priority.
