Problem with touch sensitive map light.

My overhead dome light, or "map light" comes on intermittently without touching it. Apparently this is a design issue and a know problem. Jaguar has a bulletin on it but not a recall. This bulletin requires the dealer to fix the issues by cleaning the inside contacts. While in warranty, I took my car in twice for this issue. The cleaning the internal parts only temporary fixes the issues. The issue is now back and I'm out of warranty. Unfortunately, the service manager at the dealer is unwilling to to replace the light, a $1,000 bill for parts and labor.

I feel this is unfair. I am not asking them a favor as in fixing a problem that I have incurred out of warranty. But to fix a problem that they failed to do from while I was in warranty.

This is annoying. I do like the new Cadillac 2013 XTS. And before I play $1K on something like this I wound likely trade it in. But I do like my '09 SC and would probably prefer to keep it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any helpful insight.

They should fix the problem. It's because they refused to fix it, that's why the light is still broken. Speak to the manager there or Jaguar USA. If you have facebook, go on there start complaining till it's fixed.

In terms of trading the car in, i wouldn't' do it. You are avoiding a problem that will chase you regardless of what car you buy.

I recommend buying extended warranty for your car. You can extended to 8 years and 100,000 miles through Jaguar. I believe it's about $3,500. Well worth it.

i had the same issue, it was so annoying and kinda embarassing, it would turn on every time i hit a bump.

they had to replace the whole unit for me.

The first has to be the bulletin which is clean and paste, if it occurs again, its replacement as you cannot claim for the same bulletin twice

Really? well I took it in twice under warranty. So it shoud've been replaced the 2nd time?

I know this isn't what you want to hear but you could pull the bulb out for the time being. At least it won't be flickering on and off during the day.

I don't believe these lights are touch sensitive. All I have to do is wave a finger close to the light to turn it off and on. Don't have to touch it at all.

we do, matter of fact we preorder them if it does it again and the customer calls to say its doing it again and we've already done the bulletin. That way we can change them out in 10 minutes while they wait. Maybe this is why we're a "pride of jaguar" dealer several years running:) i would be curious as to the wording and what was done on each of those 2 repairs. ie they might have repeated repair and NO CHARGED it to warranty. We have occassionally mistakenly not seen the bulletin done and repeated it only to be denied payment from jaguar on the repair. This would be a line of possible recourse, youll have to see

Could this happen while the vehicle is parked overnight ? and deplete the battery.

carzaddict Jul 12, 2017 08:40 PM

no not really

Kaeghl Jul 13, 2017 10:32 AM

so how would your average owner go about cleaning or replacing the item?

MarkN Jul 13, 2017 01:59 PM

$1K to replace a light bulb issue....YIKES!

Open a case with jaguar. It was still under warranty when you brought it in initially not your fault they couldn't fix it properly.

Full replacement is not a bulb it is the whole overhead console light assembly with all the other electronics in it. There is a repair kit out sence this thread back in 2012. I would try that first, its cheap and easy to do

I have just acquired a 2012 XJL that has been in a time capsule (15K miles). I have been going through it to see what it all needs and one of the issues I have is that one of the dome/map lights coming on as described in the above XF thread. You mentioned in 2017 a repair kit has been put out for this problem - is this something that the dealer shop uses or is this a kit you buy for DIY? Fine either way, just needing a first step.
Thx!

Hi All - am new to this forum and excited to be here. I recently acquired a 2012 XJ with the same problem noted in this XF thread. I have an XF that the overhead lamp assembly looks similar, so am guessing this conversation would apply. Brutal: is the repair kit that you mentioned above something that the dealer uses in their tool set, or is this something that you can order for a DIY job. Either will work for me, but not sure from your reply.
Thx!

^^^find the bulletin to see what to do and you can order or pickup at a dealer. . Or get 3 little heat shrink sleeves to fit, dielectric grease and alcohol pads to clean and save the money on the kit. May not even need the grease anymore

Thanks!
