I sold my 2008 BMW 135i this past weekend and pulled the trigger on purchasing a 2012 CPO XF Base with 25,000 miles on it. Silver with black interior. I've owned it just over 24 hours and I'm loving it already.

I have noticed that, coming from BMW forums, the mod bug is quite a bit less prevalent with Jaguar owners. What I have planned is:
  • Powdercoat grill black
  • Powdercoat all chrome on exterior (except rear bar on trunk)
  • upgrade to lighter (possibly larger) wheels
  • possibly an exhaust depending on what the general forum consensus is about their quality

I would really like to go with a staggered setup for the wheels. Something that has a little more of a lip than the fronts do. Does anyone have any wheel suggestions for something like that?

In regards to the exhaust, I had a pretty pricey setup on my BMW and it still droned at highway speeds between 70-75mph. Is this just something that is a problem with almost all exhaust systems? I would love to have something just a little more throaty and guttural than the current stock setup. I live in an area with no emissions testing so that's not anything I have to worry about.

Anyway, I'm glad to be apart of the forum and look forward to reading many more informative posts for all you experts in the future.

-Mike

Congrats and God help you joing this forum.

Exhaust I have magnaflow cans that replaced stock 2010 V8 NA - it is noisy - when reviewing it is louder and deeper than the F Type R, but of course less pops and crackles. Drones around 1900-2000 RPM so keep it in s mode and you will never notice it lol

Haha, thanks. It's pretty interesting to see the difference between owners of BMWs and Jags. My other cars have been an Acura and Infiniti which both had pretty active modding forums as well. To each his own I guess.

Damn, I hate to hear about the drone. That really killed the fun for me on interstate trips. My girlfriend would give me all kinds of hell every time we got into the drone range.

I am considering buying this: Jaguar XF & XF SC Performance Exhaust System 2010-Newer 5.0L models - Mina Gallery Inc and hoping that they are true to their word by saying "At idle and cruising speeds the system will deliver a uniquely mild European tone."

Welcome fellow Bimmer convert. I got mine recently too.
Mine is an s/c, but was still way too quiet. I've removed the engine cover and cut the resonators on the intakes and it gives me way more growl (and supercharger whine) without any speed drone. May be a quick, easy (and free!) way to get a little more sound while you consider your exhaust options.

For wheels, I have some 20" TiS DC537s that the prior owner put on them. They're absolutely gorgeous, but they stick out far enough that the wife just curbed one yesterday (now I've gotta figure out if it can be fixed).

Can you tell me more about cutting the resonators? Maybe a picture or two?

Thanks!

WELL FYI i dont know about the 2012 but my grill on the 2010 XFS is plastic...powder coating is not an option...painting or buying a black stainless aftermarket grill is more viable...i would like to get mine a little blacker as well, never been a chrome fan...i have factory chrome 20's on it that id like to swap out... staggered 10" in the rear and 8.5" ? in front...

Probably worth saying mine are staggered as well.

Welcome, I have a 2011 supercharged that came with staggered setup oems, I bought Saving BM3''s for summer, staggered. Lexani, XO, Ace, and Coventry all make wheels that fit. You need 5 x 108.

I tried finding the post I saw it on, but no luck so far. Basically, all you do is take off the intake tubes and you'll see the pipes that come off them but go nowhere. Those are the resonators. They're just there to make the intake quiet.

I took a jigsaw and cut them off, then cut the ends off them to use as plugs. Then I used my soldering iron to plastic weld (fancy term for melting) the plug onto the intake pipe. I didn't take pics through the process, since there was already another post, but I've attached pics of my intake from above and a closeup. I haven't gotten around to sanding the plastic to make it pretty yet. Mine is a 4.2 SC, so yours will look a bit different.

Congrats! I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on one too.

And like you, I'm used to modding my cars, so wheels, maybe a slight drop, and some subtle exterior mods will be on my list too.

Here's a place that sells various rims for the XF, just put the make and model in the search engine, and you'll see a few pages of them, some with staggered setups:

Jaguar Custom Wheels 18 19 20 22 24 inch

Congrats on the new car - I'm sure you'll love it. I have the Mina exhaust on my 2010 supercharged. It's terrific - louder but not ridiculous. And I don't notice any drone issues. Was a bit poppy at first but it settled down. Lots of us on the forum here have them - and Mina did a good deal to forum members so worth asking. And it's a quick bold on job.

Folks have plast-dipped the grill (search the forum for details) and sounded pleased with it

Larger wheels are good if you don't live in pothole regions. Yours are prob 18inch on the base? Lots of 19inch options available and the SC and XFR models run on 20inch. You can stagger the setup (standard on SC and XFR) typically around 8.5 or 9 inch wide at front and 10 at rear. I recently got a set of Rohana RF2 staggered 20inch for my summer wheels - they are terrific. And they stick out quite a bit more at the rear which is how I think the car should have looked

Many have done some sort of tint on the windows. Changed bulbs, interior lighting etc to LED. You can switch supercharger pulley and tune the SC and XFR models but not sure there is much more for raw power on the NA V8

Lots of people switched to ceramics to reduce dusty OeM brakes.

The rest is mostly cosmetics - worth a browse through the forum to see what others have done in the past

Good luck!

I've already made a few subtle changes...

I've painted the ugly chrome mirror caps gloss black:

Then I took apart the grill badge and painted the grooved background red:

I am very happy with the progress so far. This weekend I will be removing the front bumper so that I can paint the chrome grille and two chrome front bumper inserts.
