I have been told that my rear brake pads are down to 3mm and will need replacing together with the rotors. Do the rotors have to be replaced and any suggestions on the best brake pads and if required the best rotors for the rear??

You have a little more life at 3mm but replacement will be needed soon. Did the wear sensor trigger and give you a warning on the info display - usually around 4mm

Many threads on this. Lots of us switched from the very dusty oem pads to ceramics - EBC redstuff in my case and Portersfield R4S for some others. Both seem great performance and much lower dust. You should prob switch all four wheels if you go that route - not just rears

On rotors the dealers replace with every pad change but seems unnecessary unless they are unevenly warn (eg pulsing brake pedal) or badly scored. Measure with caliper to see if replacement is needed - think rears are 20mm new and usable to 17mm. Which should be at least 2 sets of pads

I wouldn't pay dealer to do brakes. Nothing complex - and they often charge $1000 per axle - you can do at a good Indy for a fraction of that.

If you need rotors I used the R1 Concepts eLine and find them great

You will prob need to replace wear sensor - on the rear right wheel (and front left if you do fronts). You can get them on eBay / Amazon etc for $10-15. Don't pay jag prices...

 

No warning light yet just the jaguar dealers verbal after my service no indication on my receipt either?

 

Unless someone has bypassed the sensor, that would suggest you still have 4mm or more to go. So you likely have plenty of time before that's needed.

 

Do not trust the brake pad wear sensor warning system!

If you really have 3 mm left on the rear pads then that is plenty for a few thousand miles yet, but I for one would whip the wheels off and check myself rather than trust someone else's say so.

 

I am about to replace my rear brakes and rotors on my 2012 XJ any advice, any preferences re pads: semi metallic as per original or ceramic?

The cross drilled and slotted rotors are really only for added bling and they don't improve the braking performance at all, but they will still be perfectly OK and you can usually get them for cheaper than OEM so your choice. The only downsides are they will be no good for serious track work (which I somehow doubt you have in mind!) as they are prone to crack when they get very hot, and some of them tend to make a slight "whooshing" noise at low speed (although none that I have fitted have ever done this).
Most definitely go for ceramic pads and not OEM or other semi-metallic.
Waaay less dust (about 1/4 as much), much smoother braking in stop/go traffic (no more "on/off switch" feel) and in most cases much less or even zero "graunch" just as you come to a stop which I have always had with the stock pads.
Lastly, if you decide to go with drilled and slotted rotors then it would look a little strange having them on the rear only so you may as well go the whole hog, same with the pads.

Centric or C-TEK or PowerSport or Brakenetic or R1 Concepts plus others, just search eBay Motors.
All very similar and pretty much in the same price range, depending on plain vs slotted vs drilled vs both, I suspect they are the same rotors all made in China just branded differently.

 

I am getting conflicting info on how many brake pad wear sensors are required for the front and the rear pad replacement! anyone have the correct answer?

Also why is it difficult to find Ceramic Pads for the fronts any suggestions for good mid priced Ceramic pads for the Fronts of my 2012 XJ Base 5.0L??

 

Two brake pad wear sensors, one on the front left and one on the rear right, both on the inner pad.
I'm guessing your 2012 base XJ has the 355 mm front brakes, in which case there is a reasonable choice of ceramic pads (unlike the 380 mm front brakes).
I put PowerStop Evolution ceramic pads on my old XFS (355 mm front and 326 mm rear) and they were great - very low dust, zero noise, smooth progressive braking and low wear.

 

Installing the following brakes by the end of the week.

All good choices on the brakes. You'll be happy with them, and it's pretty much what I have on both of my XF's. Ceramic pads need some miles before they give their best performance, so don't judge them until you have 300-500 miles on them.

Now to find a body shop that will remove the hood ornament and fill the holes...

Lots of opinions on what kind of oil to use, and then there's what Jag says (But by law cannot mandate you use for warranty coverage or anything else, or they have to provide it for free, Per the Moss Mag Act), I actually use WalMart Super Tech 5w 20 in my XFR and have done so for the last 4 years with no issues, also change my oil every 2-4Kmi. Those extended oil change lengths will only make your dealer rich in the long run, The most current 5w20 API GF-5 SN certified oil will suffice, Syn or conventional, I like Syn.
As far as filters, from what I've seen all are imported from China and re branded, I usually buy in bulk from Ebay of Alibaba and again have had no issues. I am now at 98890mi.

 

Anyone know where I can get the Jaguar Authorized Castrol Oil ? It appears that Castrol only sell the authorized oil direct to jaguar dealers ??
also any recommendation for a good reasonably priced oil filter for my 2012 XJ 5.0.L it appears that most brands are made in China and they charge hefty prices for China made with brand name???
I can find good Front Brake Pads at reasonable price but most of them do not have the necessary hardware ? Is new hardware necessary??

 

This has been covered countless times, but you do not need to use the special Castrol Unobtainium brew, any fully synthetic 5W20 or 0W20 which meets the JLR spec for the AJ133 V8 is perfectly OK and there are many oils which meet this spec. I have never used Castrol oil of any type in my XFR or F-Type across many oil changes, instead I have used Aussie brands Penrite and Nulon of the correct spec with zero problems.
As for the oil filter, it is the exact same filter across all AJ133 and AJ126 engines, literally dozens of them out there, I have used OEM Jaguar, Wix, Mann and Mahle with zero problems. Go search on Rock Auto or Fleabay, heaps of choices and most of them a lot cheaper than OEM.
You don't need new brake hardware 99% of the time, just the pads will do. With the front brakes the included hardware with some of the brake pad kits is either or both of the plastic sleeves that the caliper slide pins sit in or the anti-rattle clip. Very rarely will either of these need renewing and it's always a good idea when doing a brake pad change to check the condition of and clean the caliper slide pins and the plastic sleeves.
If you need to renew the sleeves or you simply choose to do so, be warned that they are tough ****'s to remove and replace, they fit very very tightly!
