Default Restricted Performance....ARGH!

I was 140 miles from home and the check engine and restricted performance lamps lit. On the highway car tops out between 60 - 70 mph, sputters climbing any incline and stalls if I slow or stop. I was miraculously able to drive it home with just a few stalls but used almost 30 gallons of gas to go 140 miles!!! I stopped twice to fill.

Now that I am home I'll drop it at the Jag dealer Sunday night and get the bad news Monday. I have an appointment Tuesday at my local foreign shop to have my Mina Exhaust and Pulley installed so they'd better fix it quickly!!

Burning that much fuel has got to be very hard on the cats? I wonder if any permanent damage was done. They must have been burning very hot!

Hope to hear it's a minor repair!

Yeah, I thought about not driving so far but the alternative was tow 30 miles or so to nearest jag dealer, rent a car and drive 2.5 hours home, and then come back next week to get it. The owner manual referenced "limp-home mode", so I decided to try and limp home.

Sorry to hear it. The only times I've ever seen the Restricted Performance was cooling related and it went away after cooling down. And I was always doing something that caused it to be hot when RP showed up. Yours is definitely different.

Do you have warranty?

My warranty expired in April. I joked with the service manager and said now everything will break. he said they have a joke..."what's that noise - it's the sound of your warranty expiring".

2 weeks ago I spent $300 to diagnose and repair a broken wire in my door harness. car thought drivers door was open so it wouldn't lock, windows wouldn't open, etc.

Is there an indy Jag shop near you? Then you can take it to the dealer for diagnosis, and if too much to repair there, get a quote from the indy shop.

Interestingly, there's an Indy and I have an apt Tuesday to put my pulley and exhaust on. I decided to take it to the dealer this time because it just came off warranty and these lamps went on once before so just in case it's related...or they have some sympathy....

I drove it to the jaguar dealer (12 miles) moments ago. Same issues but not as bad. Likely because it wasn't as hot yet. The check engine light was on continuous but the restricted performance went on and off - something it hadn't done the entire 140 mile trek home.

I don't have an apt but left it with the night drop and a note. I hope they can at least look at it - and maybe even repair tomorrow and then stay on schedule for the mina installs Tuesday

Well...... I heard from the dealer moments ago. I was at the gym, and am not a mechanic so much of what he said when in 1 ear and out the other. A bunch of codes; entire left bank needs replacement - $1700 parts & labor.

That might be it (but I doubt it) - because Cylinder #5 (on the other side) also threw a code but he said it *might* go away once the other side is repaired.

So, we start with $1700 and new everything on 1 side and go from there. Once it's all done and I have paperwork I'll give better details. Depending on parts availability I'll get it back tomorrow or Wednesday

When you say "Entire Left Bank"..I'm assuming that means the whole head assy, valves included..?

Just for statistics..could you give the current:

Mileage
Brand of fuel usually used
Octane of fuel usually used
E10 fuel or Pure gasoline
How heavy was your foot
and most importantly, how many blondes you did in the back seat.

- 70,000 miles
- 93 octane ALWAYS (unless wherever I am only has 91 or 92), but ANY brand
- Lately, my foot has been pretty heavy. I have been driving the car and having fun.
-I had a picture of the blonde here but they made me take it down Oh, you said how many.....thankfully the car doesn't talk. car doesn't do much of anything these days.

Thanks Mark...Based on your feedback, I don't think it was anything you were doing or used, fuel wise...And it's an XFR, it should be able to handle a little fun driving too..as long as it wasn't red-lining it every time you left a stop light.

As far as the blonde..I remember her with fond memories of her bodacious ta-ta's....Not to be confused with the maker of the Jaguar.

Left bank sounds like injectors...I hope your bill comes in at or below estimate Mark but I have to say my warranty decision is giving me the warm fuzzies at the moment ;-) -

I have a 2010 also but under 50K miles...so was a little nervous that a tune and a pulley and an intake may have been tempting fate but YOLO as my daughter is fond of saying. So my Varex mufflers come in tomorrow....

Correct, it is the injectors.

I am fairly certain the initial side will cost $1,700 and not a penny less. I am also fairly certain there will be more work after this although service manager said "think positive". I know he feels bad with the amount of work and only 70,000 miles. I whined a bit.....something like a Honda would just be breaking in and this car has 1 foot in its' grave. he didn't like that.

So it isn't the whole head assy?..just the Injectors?..Why didn't you tell me when I asked?

Maybe you should start throwing a can of BG-44K in every 5000 miles from now on or stick with a top tier gasoline brand like Shell..Ask them at the dealer obout 44K..I'd like to hear what they say about it...My dealer recommends it religiously and saves a lot of future injector issues. as I'm told by 20 year experienced techs.

I just wish we could buy gas that hasn't been adulterated with that ethanol crap even if it was a separate pump. I've replaced two O2 sensors in the past on other vehicles which my mechanic suspected was due to ethanol issues. I'll drink ethanol but I don't want it in my Jag ;-)

I had intermittent issues with Restricted performance lights with my XF years ago. The dealer cleaned the injectors under warranty (typically $300 charge) to correct the issue. They said it was related to ethanol in the gas. I was told it was fairly common based on what they see at the dealer. They told me to run a can of BG44K every once in a while to prevent it from happening in the future. I run about 2 or 3 cans a year (~$20/can) and haven't had an issue since. It's cheap and it can't hurt.
