Should a garage sell a car with 100% worn brake discs
I do mostly highway/motorway driving as well....aout 65 miles/day. I'm at 110k miles on my Akebono pads.
Hmmm. I probably should pull the wheels and take a peek.
Surely they can't last *forever* !
Cheers
DD
There's certainly a lot of factors to take into account, not least of which are the types of miles covered and driving style.
Clearly lots of motorway miles and an easy driver will make pads / discs last a long long time, whilst a lot of stop / start and very spirited driving will have an adverse affect.
I got around 50k iirc on my first set of pads on my A6 then onto around 90k or thereabouts on my 2nd set, still on the original OEM discs.
To be fair although there was a lip I could have fitted another set of pads and went perhaps halway through before requiring replacement, but chose to do all pads / discs all round.
Like anything in engineering, usually weak points are designed in, these usually being the easier / cheaper to replace items, in this case, the pads.
As stated though, we're all different.............each to their own

Unfortunately, it is caveat emptor (You drive a Jag now. You have to get use to using fancy words). Always, always, get a pre-purchase inspection on a used car, no matter what the make, unless you buy a CPO from a marque's franchised dealer. And sometimes even then, depending on the reputation of said dealership.

Hi everyone, For some strange reason I have not been getting message alerts to advise that I had replies so am sorry for not responding to peoples advice and help.
I will quote on the messages accordingly. Thanks again.

I want to focus on the MOT.....When was this done?
Was it sold with the remaining 4 months MOT or similar OR was it 12 months MOT that they had done??
I'd be with Graham on this......IF it was a 12 months sticker that they had put on it, I'd be calling them and suggesting that they were at it!
I've had independent checks done and this, that & the other is needed. I wanted to give you the opportunity to comment before I contact Vosa with my complaint.
If they are an MOT testing station they will be registered by Vosa and the very mention of their name will make them think twice, as if any wrong doing is found they can have their licence revoked and or severe penalties imposed.
I had this issue with a Renault Clio I had bought for my son and subsequently found what turned out to be serios steering issues. The car had been MOT'd only a week before so I contacted the garage and went down the route as above.
They asked me to bring the car in so they could investigate, which I did. They found the issues as discussed and resolved to make good the repair at a cost ( to them ) of around £300+
They gave me a loan car in the interim and I collected the car a few days later.
Hope it helps
Good luck

Thanks for the advice. The car was sold with a new mot done at a seperate garage, what their relationship between them is not something I can answer.
I am of course 'very' surprised that there are no advisories stating the tyres, steering and brakes (brakes I can understand a little more as its down to efficiency)
It does make you wonder if they might have a 'keen' working relationship doesnt it.
I will speak with them again and ask what they think. I will also also at other garages as well and see what they think.
My other real gripe with the selling garage is that they have not provided 'any' paper work in relation to the service that has been done, surely there should be records on the paper work to point out that the brakes are excessively worn.

The MOT sides with the selling garage.
Without knowing WHY the dealer stated they need replacing, no 'verdict' can be reached.
It's very possible that the technician assumed (***-u-me) that he might not see the car again for another X number of months/years or X thousands of miles and it's possible that the brakes might actually be worn out before then, so it's best to replace them now.
There's a local F*rd dealer here that uses 2/3 worn as his threshold.

Assuming this is only a week or so old, personally I'd possibly even look at asking a qualified MOT tester to re test to check for any issues, but wouldn't necessarily explain why.
After that and depending on what came up, I'd first try the Jaguar dealer and if that fails look to the indy garage that did the MOT perhaps explaining that you got a 2nd opinion which was a mis match and you were considering contacting VOSA for advice.
Chances are, if there was any wrong doing that will be a wake up call for them to offer to put things right...........you really have nothing to lose except a little time, a few phone calls and maybe £40
