Default Troubling news about VVT Solenoids - and a solution

So as part of my rebuild I decided to replace all the timing parts for new - if I'm this deep in it, I may as well end up with basically a new engine at the end of it. The VVT solenoids (part number C2P13996) were listed at $104 online which seemed pretty reasonable, and indeed is the part number listed for all the other 5.0 cars like the F Types and XKs etc.

However, when I tried to order it online from a dealer, this is the reply I got back:

IT SEEMS THE ITEM YOU ARE LOOKING FOR HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED BY JAGUAR. YOU MAY BE ABLE TO CALL XK'S UNLIMITED TO FIND A REPRODUCTION PIECE AT 800-444-5247. YOU MAY ALSO TRY CALLING JAGUAR HEAVEN FOR A GOOD USED ONE AT 800-969-4524. THANKS,

LISTED HERE ARE DISCONTINUED PARTS
C2P13996
...even though this has (presumably) been fitted to 5.0 F Types reasonably recently?! I find this hard to believe but if true it's a bit worrying.

Anyway, here's an alternative solution - buy a VVT solenoid intended for the Range Rover Sport. They're readily available from Standard Motor Products, Dorman, etc. Unfortunately, the connector is different (or at least it was on my loom/solenoids), but Standard Motor Products sell a pigtail connector that fits - it's actually the connector for our engine's coolant temperature sensor - part number S2034. It comes with butt connectors and heatshrink, so you can splice this into the loom. Here's a pic, ignore the rest of the unfinished engine around it :

Default Wire splice

Hey thanks for this information you saved me a headache. When splicing the wire how did you know which two wires to connect. I ordered the part and noticed the colors don't match.

Default Open circuit

Thanks for the information. I had a problem with one vvt but decided to change all of them to keep things matching. When I connected the wires I got a open circuit code. Maybe my butt connectors aren’t the best. Would any auto shop be able to splice the wires and connect them for me or maybe a speaker shop? What do you suggest?

Buy a little soldering iron and some small heatshrink from Amazon and do it yourself. Easy soldering job.
Or use some of these.....

UPDATE

There is a much better solution than the one I listed above (as the connector didn't latch well onto the solenoid), JLR have "conversion" looms that allow you to splice in the correct connector onto your loom.

I'll try and find the part number.

Dave - Did you ever figure out the part number for the VVT solenoid connectors or "conversion looms"? I just started getting a P0020 Code (Intake A - Camshaft Position Actuator, Bank 2 - open circuit), and when I checked the wiring, one of the wires had snapped at the connector housing. When I went to examine it, the other wire snapped and the whole connector came off at the base, so I had no wire to work with to splice it back in. I guess the wires caught hell when I was doing all of the other work.

D'oh!

Straight-on View of Connector

Anyway, I've been trying to track down the connector all night, without much luck, and I didn't want to purchase a whole new (used) wire harness for just one connector, nor do I really want to buy a new solenoid or screw with trying to re-pin the brittle connector housing. I did stumble upon the bulletin entitled, "Jaguar VCT Change," which lists Jaguar part# C2D40548 as the connector to which I believe you were referring, but I can't find a decent picture of it straight-on, so I can't really compare it to mine. What further confused me is that the bulletin says, "bulletin applies to 2014 Jaguar XF/X250, XJ/X351 and XK/X150 vehicles," and I have a 2011, but the solenoid which it says needs the new "link harness" (B) looks like mine.

New vs. Old

C2D40548

FCP Euro has the link harness (C2D40548) for sale, though, so maybe I'll just spin the wheel and buy one, with the option to return it, if it's not correct.Thoughts? As always, thanks!

After further research, it appears that Jaguar part# C2D40548simply allows splicing the new-style connectors for the new-style solenoids (C2Z27363 ???) into the harness wiring with the old-style connectors. Since I have the old-style solenoids (C2P13996), which are discontinued, and I can't find the part number for a pigtail connector for them, I guess I might need to just A) buy the wiring adapter (C2D40548) and a new solenoid, and splice the wires into the harness, B) somehow manage to re-pin the connector without damaging it, or C) find a cheap used engine wire harness with the correct old-style connectors on it and just keep the rest of it for any future needs.

Along with replacing the sagging headliner, sunroof trim, and all of the other alcantara/suede pieces, my car is just the gift that keeps on giving.

I know I'm probably just talking to myself here, but I think I might've found it, in case anyone else ever finds themselves in my position. After de-pinning my OE connector and trying to source the right size & shape pins (nightmare), so I could attach longer pins and wires to the connector, I decided to drill further down into the Ford pigtails catalog and came across "Ford WPT-1082 AU2Z-14S411-EA," which looks almost identical. RockAuto lists them as PCV Valve Heater Connectors for Fords for the 2010 - 2014 MY range, which aligns with the 2010-2011 timeframe of Jags' VCT solenoids using those connectors, so I ordered one on Amazon. I should know for sure on Saturday and will confirm/deny.

For reference:

Ford WPT-1082 AU2Z-14S411-EA

Ford WPT-1082 MY Range from RockAuto

My other lowest-priced option was going to be buying a used VCT solenoid with the connector still attached and just lengthening the wire to splice.

Used VCT Solenoid for Sale with Appropriate Connector Still Attached

Fingers crossed...

Hallelujah, it's a perfect fit!!!

Ford WPT-1082 Perfect Fit

Confirming that the Ford Motorcraft WPT-1082 AU2Z-14S411-EA connector (or just "Ford WPT-1082" ) is the exact match for a 2011 Jaguar XFR VVT solenoid connector. I think the year range it'll definitely fit is 2010-11, so also XF Supercharged, and probably naturally aspirated XFs, probably all XJs from that MY year range, possibly even Supercharged (and maybe NA) 5.0L Rovers of that MY range, etc.

Super Note: If you ever need a hard-to-find connector for a few-year-old Jag, check the Ford pigtail brochures, first!!!
