Default What to buy? 09 XF Supercharged 4.2 vs 10 XF Supercharged 5.0?

Hello, been researching a new to me car. I see a lot more 09 XF supercharged for sale. They seem to range in price from $12k-19k then the 2010 XF supercharged seem to be at $16-22k. I realize the 4.2 is a carry over from the Type S. Then I thought I saw somewhere about early engines issues. Is that the4.2 or the 5.0? I know there is a HP difference. But can someone help point me in the right direction of what I should be looking for? Or positives and negatives to each engine in the early ones? Or your opinion on what one is a better choice? Thanks we are wanting a second car or possibly replace a 2014 Cadillac ATS +4 Performance. We had a 05 Mercedes E500 before that, that we Loved, it was invonved on a collision. I have always liked the Jaguar, so we are going to give one a try. The Jaguars seem like such a deal on the used market. I am a previous Mechanic and always DIY if possible. Thanks

Going from the 4.2L with 420hp to the 5L with 470hp is going to be your main difference. I have the 4.2L SC and I wouldn't pay to trade up to a 5L SC. I might for the XFR. If I were looking like you are I'd go with the 5L SC if the cost wasn't too much more. A few K seems fair but 5k more might be a little much in my opinion. The XF Supercharged cars are a bargain for what you get. Use the forums when you have issues. If you can DIY then you should be able to take care of things that pop up without having to pay the dealer a ton of money.

It seems like 09-11 XF's can share these common issues: dash leather pulls up, over head lights issues (bad module), rotating vents stop working, and electrical issues (usually bad battery).

Other major items:

2009's had differential issues (contaminants in diff fluid from factory) which is fairly major. Make sure the diff isn't leaking or making noise. Change the fluid immediately to get contaminates out. 5 minute fix can save a huge bill. They changed the diff design so it's expensive to get all the new components.

2009's have issues with the coolant tank nipple cracking and leaking coolant

2010+ 5L had issues with water pumps failing. They went through a few versions.

2010+ 5L some have noted tensioner issues at high miles

Search the forums for more.

I see the 4.2l's in the high teens, the 5.0 are all in the mid 20's to low 30s out here.
The 5.0 has more mod room for power.
The 5.0 is also still being produced while the 4.2 is more of an orphan (harder to get parts for)

Default go with the 5.0

For about $1000 you can do an ECU tune on the 5.0 and make it a 510 HP XFR like machine. Go with the 5.0 for sure. Amazing car.

If your budget can accommodate it I'll suggest getting a 2012 as the facelift cars seems to have several fixes done to common problems on the pre-facelift cars. I just bought mine a few months ago and I went with a 2013 to get the newer 8 speed tranny.

For example this one is out there. Interior looks a tad more worn than others, and I haven't checked the carfax, but the price is right.

+1 to the 8 speed.. i have 2010 6 speed and after 18 months of ownership would love to have the 8 speed . re: power potential, many with 5.0 S/C end up modifying for more power once the "bug" hits them and I'm no different. the tuning of the supercharged model can put it similar to 550hp. The low to mid range rpm part throttle torque of the 5.0 s/c is amazing and impresses every time.
in mid 20k's there are 2013 or newer models. they have 8 speed and better power potential of he bosch system. if you're paying cash and needign to stay in $teens$ that's one thing. if financing, maybe consider newer one at longer term for similar payment? the miles will be lower and it will last longer so you could somewhat justify it.. or buy our older ones so we can all buy newer ones!!!

Oh yeah forgot the bonus of the bosch ECU on the 2013+ also. Velocity told me that they can tune these to 605hp out of the box. No other upgrades.

damn now i might have to get a xfr on my next time at that price. Although i dont need another supercharged car needing 93octane as a daily driver. Of almost 80 miles a day. And i would start modding it too

Spend the extra money on the 2012+ facelift, or regret it every time you see one in traffic. Nothing can be done about the dated look of the older cars and rock hard seats. Combined with other improvements its well worth it. Just make sure the PPI includes high scrutiny on the timing chain tensioners for the 5.0. Walk away from any car without full service history. Good luck.
