121k miles, replacement engine and turbo - buy?
Hi all,
on another episode of fear-mongering, I’ve seen a 2013 XJL Portfolio, with 121k miles that is specced immensely. I’ve managed to agree to a price of £11,000. What the current owner didn’t tell me is that it has had a replacement second hand engine and new turbo. I rang the place who serviced the vehicle to obtain that information. Due to GDPR rules, he couldn’t tell me much but said a lot of money was put into the car. He said it was solid when it left their place. A complete and comprehensive inspection will cost £410. Do I walk away? I’m in love with the spec but I need an outsiders opinion. |
What are GDPR rules?
If I can't get info on a used car. I walk away! . . . |
I betcha the "P" stands for "privacy" :icon_wink:
Would the seller allow the repair shop to disclose the scope of work? I would think a written release should suffice. Or perhaps this same shop could do your PPI. |
You would think the seller had an invoice of some sort.
Replacement engine - not a cheap job, turbo replaced that says this is a 306DT - and it has two turbos. A decent low miles 306DT is going to cost several thousand, they break if not treated right so there's a good market for them and the vehicle breakers know it, For a Diesel the miles aren't such a concern I'm not far off 200k miles, but I stay on top of things and I do all my own stuff, I don't drive it like a dragster (breaks cranks in V6 Diesels) - don't trust a service history, my experience of them is that they are worthless and prove nothing - what is useful is to see recommended work that the owner declined to carry out. but most owners conveniently lose that. |
