Aim Headlights
 

I recently replaced my headlight bulbs with Philips D3S Xenon X-tremeVision bulbs (42403XVC1) and they are brighter than the original Osrams. I would like to fine tune the aim and know there are two adjuster screws on each headlamp assembly, but turning them does not seem to move the light. I have tried on low beam and high beam without results. I have turned the allen screws up to 3 full turns without success. I have the Adaptive Headlamp system.Any assistance would be appreciated.

XJsss, looking at the repair manual, it says that all you need to do is turn the two allen screws to adjust the headlights. there are no special changes that need to be done if you have the adaptive headlights.

Thermo, that is what I read in the workshop manual also.

@XJsss reviving an old thread, any progress on adjusting the headlights? i feel like mine are pointing low

carz I have adjusted mine. the inner adjusters are height and the outers are for the adaptive swing. for me I had to be on a straight level street. I adjusted on low beam going out level and maybe 1 degree down. The swing was alot more difficult and involved several drives and watching how the lights followed my turning. I finally found a level parking lot with a mound at the end that went up several feet and got the final swing adjustments there.

do you have a picture or diagram showing the slot for the dipped beam? i thought it would be much more obvious

Thanks for getting back to me. Which way do I turn to go up? Either way I turned the screw, didn’t change the position. do i need to apply pressure to the screw?

The only way to tell if your adjustment is working is to be on a road stopped hood opened and lights pointing down the road as up close to a wall you can't see the change that well. The inner adjuster is height and easily seen in this setup.The outer adjusters are for the swing on turns and may not need adjusting. And for that you have to again be on the street, high beams on, and turn the steering wheel and follow the beam swing.

I just went thru this and the big problem is Jaguar will only tell you to use head light aiming equipment.
That's really only for dealers.

After converting to the newer LED headlights I never thought they were aimed properly. They were just too low and needed to be raised up. So I got the car level and used the old school method. 25' away from a wall with the car level. Then I used a laser level to find the exact height of the headlight bulb on the car. NOT the beam, the head light bulb.

Then I could swing the level 180 to put the headlight bulb height on the wall where I had placed masking tape so I could write on it. Now you know where the beam is in relation to the headlight. I found mine were pretty low. The LED's have a very strong cut off compared to the old style HID bulbs.

Harbor Freight has a laser level and is the one I have. It's cheap at under $30.

I still want to raise them some more as I do not get flashed and the XJ is a low vehicle compared to most modern trucks/SUV's.
On my 2014 is was very obvious the lights moved when I turned the adjuster. I have not worried about the self steering portion of the head lamps as they don't seem very useful to me.

i keep twisting the adjustments, clockwise....no difference in position

The adjusters could be broken?
On my old S Type this was common and they have an aftermarket repair kit out to fix it.
The plastic gear strips out.
But I can't find one for the XJ so it's not a common problem I guess.

Do both side do the same thing?
