Brake dust on rims...
Does anyone have a secret to remove the brake dust from the rims? They are caked on there and will not come off. I bought some spray and let it soak and then scrubbed it...and nothing.
Any ideas or tips would be appreciated. Thanks. |
This stuff is pure magic.

This calls for a bit of getting low down and dirty.
I use an old car mat and get right down close to the wheels and use WD40 or a good household silicone furniture polish and some good quality cleaning rags, stockinette usually. You really have to work on it using cloth wrapped around a finger and making sure to spray the cloth and NOT THE WHEEL !!! It takes time and perseverance. Using household silicone furniture polish I find it just as good as WD40 for this job and the polish has an accumulative effect and the wheels improve and the dust doesn't stick so well. However once the wheel paint is past a certain point no amount of WD or polish will bring them up to a good standard. I took the mickey out of my daughters B/F who has a high brow car valeting franchise by cleaning the wheels on her car using WD40 and they came up like brand new. But you have to be very careful not to spray anything on the wheels or tyres. ONLY spray the cloth away from the wheel. Try it and see how it works? |
abs777,
Brake dust has been more of annoyance to me. My wheels were in great shape when i purchased the car. A good coat of wax and the dust is easily removed with a dry towel. |
Thanks guys for the advice!
