Extended Warranty_ Is $3900 too much?
 

I'm about to purchase a 2014 XJL with 45,000 miles on it. I'm being offered to purchase a 3rd party warranty for $3900. I know the factory warranty is about to expire, but was wondering if this warranty price was excessive.

3rd party warranties are totally worthless. They will always find a way to weasel out of paying. Save your money.

FYI: They are not warranties, they are insurance policies.

Also: What are you paying for the car? I got my 2014 Loaded AWD XJL with 12k miles for $43k. Full warranty goes until 5/2018. Deals are out there!

Working on jaguar for 20years, no theyre not worthless if youre with a good company. And 3900 i would say is a little too cheap, i would say around $4500-5000. That may be too cut throat and worthless( like power train) call easy care and ask about total care package. You can easily spend more than a warranty cost on a luxury car in 1 to 3 repairs. There has been a huge surge in coverages in the market in the last 10 years. But dont buy one and then go get a oil change at some little oil change shop. Go to the dealer or at least a jaguar specialist that knows the cars and what to look out for. Nothing.
I see it all the time that someone get a ext. Warranty and gets oil changes someplace else. Then comes in for a check engine light they cant diagnose and looking over the car find worn suspension, oil leaks, etc... And the repair cost far exceed the warranty cost. If you like to keep you car up in great condition and will own for a while i see no reason not to get coverage. One other thing, cost for coverage are negotiable just stay will full coverage policies. Power train or limited are worthless because most common repairs wont be covered.

What's the warranty? I was given a 3 year 36,000 mile EasyCare TotalCare warranty package and they've been fantastic. Paid out nearly $15,000 worth of claims for 3 or 4 $50 deductibles over the course of my ownership.

If your XJ is still under factory warranty you can purchase an extended warranty sold by Jaguar dealers. The pricing I paid was $3700 and covered my car for 6 more years and 100,000 miles (miles were another 50k to the 100k odometer mileage). The pricing varies by dealer as there cost is @ 3k and then they can charge whatever they want to sell it for. So call a couple of dealers and speak to the F&I people to shop for the best price. The warranty is good have had no issues on the repairs needed when the dealer (I take it to a Jaguar Dealership) calls in for coverage. Bear in mind that trim is not covered.

If you buy from Carmax you can get a 5-year, 125k-mile Bumper-to-bumper Carmax Warranty

Does Carmax have to service this warranty? If so, it could suck bad depending on your local monkeys...err mechanics.

The only aftermarket warranty worth getting is the CPO one offered by the dealer. Anything else is going to be hit or miss and you probably have to use their shops and cheap Chinese parts.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. If you're out of luck/CPO and they offer an EasyCare TotalCare package I'd take it again in a heartbeat. I drop my car off to the Jaguar dealer, get Jaguar loaners, use Jaguar authentic parts and pay a $50 deductible for anything and everything except trim and cosmetic damage, and I've never run into a problem at all. It was given to me as an apology due to my CPO not actually being a CPO, and I believe the total cost was somewhere around the $3900 mark.

As a side note, I threw some random stuff at EasyCare. $700 for a steering wheel replacement due to my complaint of it "not getting hot enough"? Approved. $550 for a switch in the steering wheel because the heated steering wheel button didn't light up and it was mildly confusing? Approved. $7000 replacing both rear sway bars, both upper and lower rear control arms, rear tire rods, all front control arms, and engine mounts due to living in NYC? Approved.

CarMax warranties are great as well and you can do the same. You may or may not have heard of Doug DeMuro, who's been chronicling his $3900 CarMax warranty on his Range Rover . (Which I think I have him beat)

So don't write off a non-CPO if it's exactly what you're looking for. There's some decent options out there. Now as for if I'd want to extend this warranty....I bet they'd want a LOT of money.

Carmax warranty is only good at their repair facilities. Last time I checked they no longer sell the full-size Range Rovers :icon_goofygrin:

no its not, and when carmax cant fix a jaguar(often) they send over here which is why there are 2 behind me in my stalls. Oh theyll do the easy stuff like oil changes, brakes and suspension, but they dont seem to be able(or dont want to make a mistake and afraid) to do simple diagnositics

I was offered the easy care/total care plan when I purchased my car (which was still under factory warranty at the time) for the low, low price of $10,000. I declined.

^^^ thats ridiculus!!! The best time and cheapest time to buy is when mileage is low and still under warranty. They must have been trying to rip your head off, :(

My car fit that criteria; I think the problem was that I traded in a Rolls-Royce and I paid cash so they figured money was no object. They were wrong.

Holy!!!! My car was a 2011, bought January 2016, and had 35,000 miles on it and it was only a $3400 (Without commission)/$3900 (With dealer and rep commission) package for 3 years 36,000 miles.

Same here: January 11, 2016 but with 40,000 miles. When I declined, I actually figured they would counter-offer but they didn't. Oh well!

The information has been very helpful. The Warranty that I'm being offered is a bumper to bumper warranty and the only thing not covered is supposed to be just routine maintenance items, such as tires, wipers, etc.

I will check with the dealership to see what their prices are on a factory extended warranty.
