Main bearing cap removal for 2011 XJ 5.0L NA
Hi guys, I'm tearing down an AJ-V8 Gen III engine and I'm currently down to the crankshaft. The main bearing bolts are somewhere between a T50 and T55 torx plus bit. I'm wondering if it's a specialized tool for the AJ Gen III application and if anyone has a link to the tool. I'll also be tearing down a supercharged 5.0L AJ-V8 Gen III in the next few days and I'd like to know if they will be the same bit. Thanks in advance for any help!
Are you sure they are Torx and not spline or XZN (Triple Square) drive? There are no Torx sizes between T50 and T55. How many splines on the bolt heads?
Maybe Dave Tibbs or Xdave will see this as they have both rebuilt engines I believe?

I believe I figured out the tool. They are called ribe sockets. I just ordered a set so hopefully this does the trick. Thanks for the help!
They were something like torx plus, similar for the head bolts.
Take a T-55, I used a 1/2", and grind a small amount from each tooth, a second each. It'll fit like a glove.
Or, I'll mail you mine Hahaha
It's the same size for both main bolts, and side bolts. Screw a bolt into the top of the cap and use a hammer to gently yank it out, almost like a slide hammer.
better yet, use a slide hammer?
Mine were VERY stubborn. Bearings fortunately, looked great.

I tried out torx plus and they didn't fit, now I tried the ribe sockets and same thing. They strip the bolt every time. I managed to get all of the bearing caps off the NA engine by banging in a torx extractor. It's just a very time consuming process. Now I'm working on supercharged engine and the bearing caps are stuck. No idea what to do here. These engines are very difficult to deal with.
Have you thought of contacting a jag dealer's parts department to see if they have a special tool you can purchase?

I called a couple jaguar dealers for help. None of them sell tools and they don't service blocks with crank or piston failure. They just get a whole new short block if any detrimental damage happens to the engine. I've managed to get all of the bolts off the main bearing caps but now they won't pull off. I tried hitting them off with an air hammer and it barely even budged them. I'm assume I need some sort of puller.
