paintless dent removal possible?
Well, it finally happened. My XJ got its first door ding from some careless arsehat.
I've been getting different answers (NO, YES, MAYBE) from dent repair places as to whether they can remove the dent from the aluminum door panel. Anyone know if it can be done on these cars? This dent, though minor, is quite irritating. |
I have no direct experience with this, but there are a couple older threads here on the forum
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ngs-pdr-48910/ It appears that while aluminum is more difficult to work with, it is not impossible. If you find a place that says it can't be done, then it sounds like they are just not experienced enough, IMO |

'Have you done one of these before?' I've seen some superb results by PDR operatives on steel bodied vehicles but I wouldn't want my car to be their first aluminium one. The current generation of aluminium Jaguars can't all be arriving at the dealers totally unmarked. It may be worth asking who they use for rectifying transit damage. Graham |

Avus9,
I have a black 2005 XJL and got caught in downtown Dallas in an unexpected storm that just came out of nowhere. I was among tall buildings and the wind was howling through the canyons and golf ball size hail pummeled the car. There was nowhere to go, so I just drove until I found a parking garage several blocks from where the hail started. By the time I got there, the hail had stopped, but the damage was done. I took the car to a dealership owned body shop that I had done business with and been very pleased with their work. It took quite a while for them to fix all of the dents, but the wait was worth it. You absolutely cannot tell that the body has ever had any kind of "injury." It was expensive ($3,000.00), but a lot of that was covered by my insurance. So my answer to you is: yes it can be done successfully, but be sure that you take it to someone with a lot of experience, especially with aluminum bodies. Good luck, Tom |
Tom with that much PDR done did the car require repainting?
One of the best things about PDR is most damage is fixed without any paint damage. So the paint stays intact. . . . |
tbird6,
No repainting was necessary. I was very glad about that since matching paint that is several years old is so difficult as to be almost impossible (I think). I also had PDR done on my previous Jag for door dings. Also, the car that I had before my first Jag was a 2000 Cadillac which got hailed on while it was at the dealership to fix several recurring mechanical issues. The worst part of that was that they did not tell me about it and I only found the damage when I was in a proper position in good lighting. Talk about angry! In fact, that triggered me to abandon the dealership that I had done business with since 1975. Thankfully, it led to my first Jag which I enjoyed until I got the 2005. Regards, Tom |
dent removal on al. door panels.
Yes, it can be done. I recently had dents removed on all four doors, cost $200. In Santa Fe NM there is a person who services all the dealers and repair shops, been doing it for 30 years and was able to remove the dents from the doors on my '06 XJR.

Most car owners avoid getting their vehicle repaired due to the fear of being unable to afford their deductibles. Conversely, link removed offers a way to bring their car back to life without having to spend additional money on repairs already covered under their vehicle’s warranty.
In addition to PDR being a speedy and inexpensive method, it offers perfect restoration without rendering the manufacturer’s warranty void and comes strongly recommended by most insurance companies. |
Yes, it can be done and the results will look great if done properly. Last summer some idiot backed up into my car and drove away after hitting both driver side doors on my 2016 XJL. The rear door only had long and wide scuff marks that I was able to buff out. The front door had a long vertical dent that wrapped around a reinforcing cross member just enough to make its shape visible. The insurance company adjuster authorized about $1,400 for the repair. I did not want bodywork on the car, so I checked with a paintless dent repair shop that I’ve used twice before. I was shocked at their $2,400 quote, but they said they could submit a supplemental request to authorize more for the repair. They told me they would bring in a specialist from one of their other shops and would need the car for a few days because they had to remove the door. Insurance company agrees (USAA), I drop the car off and get a call 4 hours late - your car is ready, sir. I couldn’t believe what I saw. It was like magic, as if the car had never been hit. Funny thing is, I was happy with the results but pissed off that they fixed it in under 4 hours and made $2,400 with no investment in materials. I almost wished they would have kept the car a few days to make me think it was a much more complex job. Oh well, my car looks new again, so I am happy. Their shop is in Tysons Corner, Northern Virginia, behind the Bentley/Aston Martin dealer. |
Being located behind the Bentley/Aston Martin dealer explains their hourly labor rate.

I've had several dents taken out by a local dent removal guy. He has told me it was easier for him to remove the larger dents than the small ones. but when he is done it's like there never was a dent. I paid him his asking price of $120 for 2 dents in the right rear door.
