Plastic screen in overhead?

Above my head, in the center of the overhead there is a dark colored, blank piece of plastic that looks like a monitor of some sort. Can some one fill me in on what this is?
I cant figure it out.

XJsss 09-21-2018 01:32 PM

That is the IR receiver for the entertainment system headphones.

Mine looks alittle different. I assume this is for passengers and not the driver.

Sorry thought you were talking about in the center of the roof. Isn't that were your map and interior lights are?

JozJag 09-22-2018 07:30 AM

I do not think so. The map lights are in front of the 3 rocker switches. There is no light that comes from the dark plastic rectangle. I have tried to make it drop down as if it were some sort of storage area... it does not move....
There is nothing in the owners manual about it. either. If I was off warranty, I would get out my tools......LOL
I am stumped....

XJsss 09-22-2018 08:28 AM

Me to, maybe someone with a MY2016 or newer will have the answer. As my overhead console is the same shape as yours, but where your dark panel is is where the lights are, maybe it's just a blanking plate that can double as an IR receiver if you have the entertainment option.

JozJag 09-22-2018 09:03 AM

I think that is it... It is where the IR receiver would be if so equipped. For now, I will go with that. As always, nice to have someone out there who is willing to try and help out. Thanks...

I asked my dealer/salesman the same thing........he didn't know. I forgot to ask the service manager later. i'll do that next service in 1500 miles.

JozJag 09-22-2018 01:09 PM

I would appreciate that.

I went to Autobahn Jaguar to schedule a 32K maint and asked the service manager. He said it had 'something' to do with the seat airbags. I asked how it did that and he didn't know. So I come up a bit short on the purpose for it. I'll keep nosing around to find something more detailed.

It would seem someone on this forum would know. Maybe if I ask the question in the proper part of the forum I could find out???? Bound to be a certified Jag mechanic on this forum that knows.

JozJag 10-12-2018 07:30 AM

Hailers, Thank you for your investigative work. I too am finding no-one truly knows what it is for. I have asked several Jag technicians at the dealer even the service manager all have different ideas as to what it is for.

I have snooped around the web sight but have found noting that address this issue.

Maybe you will get lucky and come up with the answer.

Thanks again Dave

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/g...3/#post1974510 I made another thread about this in the General Tech Forum. See the link prior to these words.

I might mention that I was irritated that I could not block out the Nav screen at night. On my other cars I can do this by pressing a button. Then only the inst cluster is lit and I can dim it, the cluster alone, when driving hours and hours at night, to save my night vision.

So after owning the car for a few months, I asked the man at the dealership I bought it from. He didin't know. So I got some black 'art' paper and cut out a section to match the screen. Then when driving at night I put that art paper over the screen.

Well a month ago, while fiddling around with screen settings, by blind luck I found it, the Nav screen, could be blacked out at night by pressing a button. The reason I mention this is to show that even the service advisors aren't 100 percent up to knowing 'everything' on the car(s) they sell. I give 'em some slack over things like this. But they should 'bust ass' trying to find out the answer for the customer imho.

I'm glad you found it. Please enlighten us and explain where that button is that makes darkness fall upon the touchscreen.

Looking at the electrical schematics for the 2018/2019 models the IR headphone transmitter is apparently still located between the two roof blinds in the middle of the car, as with the earlier models and in XJsss' photo above.

The front overhead console does not appear to have anything located behind the panel being questioned:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...153122dbbb.jpg

It does look like it was intended to have a pivoting part in there, maybe for a glasses holder as fitted to the previous X350 XJs.

Or it is possible the schematics have not been updated and that panel would cover the IR transmitter if equipped, but is just a blanking plate elsewhere. Someone with the RSE and/or top-level sound option in a 2018/2019 car would be able to tell us if they still have the central roof transmitter or not.

You can just reach up and unclip that entire panel from the rear edge and have a look - there are only two clips as shown above, then it is hooked under at the front.

On my 2017 XJR this is where the control is for the screen on and off. My finger is pointing to the button, The circle with the hash mark. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...65f0c56e26.jpg

Langstraat 10-15-2018 12:51 PM

Yeah, that’s the button, although on my 2011 it’s on the extreme right hand side,

JozJag 10-15-2018 01:03 PM

Dave, thanks... I will give that a go...

Hailers 10-15-2018 10:05 PM

That button blanks the nav screenbut also dims the instrument panel. I wanted the instrument panel bright and controled by the thumb wheel on the far left and down

This week I’m in CA pecking on a IPHONE. When I get back to TX Il’ll give an answer as to how to blank the nav screen without effecting the instrument panel lighting.....unless someone else answers first.

i know about the button reffered to in the above posrs and how it will blank the nav screen, But it will also dim the inst pnl lighting at the same time unless you configure it right.

tired ofpecking ona iphone now

Hailers.. thank you, Now I understand your need. I will continue to investigate. Maybe you will find the answer on your way home. By the way, you will pass close my home in New Mexico on you way to the great state of Texas.
