Resetting Tire Pressure Monitoring system on a Jaguar XJ or XJL
On the 2012 Jaguar XJ or XJL, when removing or replacing tires on rims the Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors usually get broken. Since you are replacing the tires, it makes sense to also replace the TPMS sensors. The issue seems to be the car relearning the new sensors.which is NOT POSSIBLE by using controls in the car. Its is possible to use aftermarket TPMS sensors made by VDO, instead of purchasing OEM senors from Jaguar Parts.
Before I replaced my OEM Pirelli tires with the Michelin Pilot Sport AS3 Plus tires, I had the rims refinished to freshen up the look. I purchased the a set of Michelin's tires at Discount Tire. The problem is that these types of tire installers are not familiar with every monitoring system on every manufactures models ever made. Oblivious the Jaguar XJL TPMS works, because it worked before I had new tires and sensors installed. After numerous trips back to the Discount Tire for the TPMS Warning Light, it was obviously that they were installed properly on the rims. The problem was that the TPMS was NOT recognizing the new sensors, because they were not programmed correctly. I researched the VDO Installation Instructions for Jaguars and took them with me to Discount Tire. Getting the car to recognize the sensors was easy, when the technician followed the instructions from VDO! I literally walked him through the menus since he had never seen them before.
The sensors MUST be in PARK MODE when installed for the car to relearn the new sensors. This can only be done with a TPMS SCAN TOOL which the tire shop already has on hand. The technician has to scan each sensor, then go through the menu and select PARK MODE, then you drive the car a couple of miles and it relearns in just minutes. Done. These are the VDO instruction for the two compatible scan tools:
New Sensor Autorelearn for Jaguar & Land Rover Tip: Sensors need to be placed in PARK mode.
This requires and Ateq VT56 or Bartec TPMS scan tool:
Bartec: Go to RELEARN, select the MMY required, go into the tool kit by selecting the wrench icon, and select SET SENSOR TO PARK MODE. (Unit on hand at Discount Tire)
Ateq VT56: Trigger the sensors as if a scan tool assisted relearn procedure is being performed and the sensors will enter PARK mode. 1. Adjust tires to vehicle placard pressure. 2. Park vehicle for at least 15 minutes 3. To learn new TPMS sensor IDs, vehicle must be driven for a minimum of 15 minutes while maintaining a speed of 30 mph (48 kph) or more. 4. Park vehicle for at least 15 minutes after driving
I recommend printing a copy of the attached PDF below and placing it with the manual in the car. It could save you hours or days trying to resolve the Tire Pressure Monitoring System Failure Warning light when replacing sensors during tire replacement.
