1996 Jag XJ12 Fuel Line Helicopter Noise
 

Hi, although I have replaced both Supply and Return Fuel Lines in my late Model year 1996 XJ12 (X305) with used lines, which are better shape than my old ones (new hoses I couldn't find), I am still hearing the same Helicopter noise. I was just wondering if its possible to find these Fuel Line Dampers, which are shaped like round canisters in Black color? If so, does anybody know where to get these Dampers? I think that might solve the problem, otherwise, can the new Supply and Return Fuel lines (Part No: NNA-6053CE / Supply; and NNA-6054CF / Return) be found anywhere in the world ? Thanks !

Looks like we will have to go to a specialist for custom made fuel lines for our cars. The rattle is very unbecoming a Jaguar, so I will be looking into that. It's possible that a hose shop could install new dampers in our existing lines.

In the thread below Seehund from Austria had the same problem and supposedly ordered a new fuel line, but he hasn't been around here for a while, so results unknown. But the line replacement worked for that XJ40 owner.

On other cars I've experienced hammering/rattling/fluid harmonics noises from p/steering and cooling systems. Lacking any knowledge whatsoever of the science involved I simply experimented with some minor bending of pipes and re-routing of hoses and the problem went away. Seemingly, in those cases, anything to alter the flow characteristics was enough to take the fluid out of the noise-making zone, so to speak. I got lucky, I guess!

If you Google "Fuel pulsation damper" or similar you'll get lots of hits, both OEM and aftermarket designs. Perhaps something could be adapted to the Jag fuel system?

I've been meaning to post up about this issue. I solved it for the most part by changing out the fuel filter! The improved flow of the new filter must have altered the factors that can cause rattling, as Doug said. No other mods were made.

The filter was changed last year and it took me a while to realize that the noise had gone away. I was changing it as a matter of maintenance, not to try to fix the rattle.

On a cold start when the engine is idling high, sometimes I can still barely hear the knock. It is at a higher rate according to the higher revs, but is still a lot less than it was. At regular idle in Park or Drive, there is no rattle anymore.
