Hi- if anyone wants me to look at this car for them, let me know:

My 96 is identical!

That is quite a find. Low mileage, great shape, and low price.

Jagsandmgs 08-12-2019 07:39 PM

Looks like a steal to me too. If I hadn’t bought another XJS a few weeks back I’d try to flip that XJ12 on bringatrailer.

23 year old car with a set of winter tires in "excellent" condition.
Things that make you go hmmm.
However if it was closer I would certainly take a looksy. :icon_captain:

I haven’t seen an engine cover like that before! Does anyone have any info?

thanks

New to me but I like it.

NTL1991 08-30-2019 04:32 AM

I contacted the seller. The car does need the headliner re-adhered or replaced, and the car does have rust behind the RH front wheel. Here are the pictures he provided me.

I am an hour and a half away, and have been thinking about this car a bit. The gentleman has had it for the past 10-12 years, and bought the car with 21k miles. He has put on about 5,000 miles a year.

That Jade Green sure is pretty!

I am a little leery about the rust, but it's not like my '40 or 305 didn't have any... With that being said, it looks like it's mainly the fender itself, and I've sourced a few in Jade Green for roughly $200 or less, which could be bolted right on. Not sure how lucky people have been with the paint matching when buying used body panels. Any insight?

It would be nice to have a "second chance" at owning a '96 XJ12.

Ugly fender! Now I’m wondering if it is overpriced. Bargain to be had perhaps? It’s been for sale for a couple weeks at least.

Nick you and I have almost crossed paths twice now. I looked at your previous XJ12 when it wouldn’t go faster than 30 mph. I couldn’t figure out the problem or get it cheap enough, but you did. Now this one!

id go visit the car, put a jack under the real wheel... and of course the wheel will move in and out... proving they all have bad output shaft bearings. Between that and the bad fender you should walk away at half his asking price.

That's right!! I forgot that you had checked out the red XJ12 before I got there!

I think you're right about the price, closer in value to $3k. He says he replaced the front springs and shocks, but I'm quite certain the front bushings will need to be done at this point. I still have all the parts for the job from my old XJ12, along with a fairly large collection of parts I pulled from the car before it was scrapped, which is what's keeping me from searching out the BMW E38 750iL I've always wanted. That and being more familiar with Jags.

I think I'm going to reply back and let him know where I stand with price, and go from there. I don't want to waste my time or his. If he's open to negotiating towards where I'm leaning, then I'd make the drive up with cash in hand to check it out.

If you end up getting it let me know. I have a fancy JD115 dealer front spring compressor you can borrow. makes the front end rebuild a little less painful. Still need to do my front end too but there’s a long line of broken Jags at my house.... and a new MG is distracting me.

Be very, very careful. It can get out of control quickly. :icon_wink: Sea Foam green, my favorite.

Well.....

Going to look at the car on Saturday. I’m justifying it by calling it a “second chance” to have a ‘12, and give some purpose to all those parts I pulled off the old car.

My plan this time would be to send the car off to my Jag Indy along with the box of front suspension parts from the old ‘12 and just have him go through it all at once, from the beginning.

Hopefully the car is as described. It’s nice knowing a specific car inside and out when looking to buy another.

Good Luck, Nick. It looks do-able for you. We are not talking about a lot of money either, for a car of its stature. I like that custom engine cover too. I want one.

Regarding the rusty fender... Check them all carefully. If the others are ok or "better" then there might be an internal leak above that RF area, like at the top of the windshield scuttle under the black cover. The kind of leak that eventually reaches the ECU. The drain tube should be visible exiting the wheel liner behind the front wheels. If not, then it has been draining inside the fender, or else the hose could be broken somewhere.

You might already know that some of the areas prone to rust are around the back window and rear quarter windows, and above the rear wheel arches.

Good luck. Hope it ends up in your driveway.

NTL1991 09-13-2019 04:08 AM

Thanks guys.

I’m going to look at that engine cover very carefully (hopefully once the car is in my driveway!) It certainly looks cool and if it’s any easier to install than the stock unit (not getting hung up under the throttle pedestal), I’m all over it! If I don’t like it I could swap my stock one in after I repaint the lines on top.

Rust inspection will need to be very thorough. Thanks for those heads up. The integrity of that FR sill area will be very important. Hopefully it’s just stained from the rusty fender above. I have sourced a good used fender in the same color that can be swapped in, but I don’t know just how well it would match.

I know my Cosmic’s were rarer, but boy I love how the X300 looks with the 20-spoke wheels. Much more fitting for the car, IMO.

Hopefully the rear sunshade hooks are intact on this car! My old car had 2 broken hooks so they were just for show.

NTL1991 do you have a V-12 in your driveway?

NTL1991 09-17-2019 10:58 AM

Oh, Sorry for not getting back to you guys!

I do not. My buddy/second driver wasn't able to make the drive up with me because his kid woke up sick that morning. I had to cancel with the seller.

If I can manage to reschedule and get all the stars to align again, I'll try to make the 1.5 hour drive up to see. It's been very busy with work so it hasn't been the easiest.

Nick
