Value of a:1995 JAGUAR XJ-12 ,67K

What is the value of a :

1995 XJ12 with 67 k miles , immaculate interior , one owner
excellent blue paint, new tires ,new front shocks, new tires.

Left valve cover leaking a bit ( wonder if it's an expensive repair)
Original wheels
AC working but takes time to get cold
Headliner dropping
Tiny ding in the rear that will need to be addressed

I also noticed the steering wheel can not move backward and forward .I hear the noise but it does not move.

I'm curious if these cars will ever become collectors ?

The XJ V12's were low volume production. This, together with the V12 being such a superb engine, has to make them desirable and collectible.

Originality, low miles and condition will be key. One other factor will be time. It could be many years before rising value outstrips overall cost.

In 1995 338 long wheel base XJ12's were produced. How many of these made it to north America not sure in '95 but a call to Jaguar Heritage will give you an approximate number imported to the U.S. I suspect the majority are over here. There were also 30 1995 Sovereign LWB produced. If yours is one of these 30 I would hang on to it or sell it to me! Again a call Jaguar Heritage would confirm if yours is one of these 30. They also produced 483 short wheel base XJ12's but as I understand only the LWB models made it over here. And another 393 XJ12 Sovereign short wheel base where produced in '95 and none of them are here.

If yours only has 67K on the clock it is a very desirable ride and should sell easily. At 67K you can stick to your price and eventually the right guy will come along. If it were me I would hang on to it (big surprise) as it will be worth double what it is now in 5 years. What is it worth now?? Unable to say as most are being sold for 1/2 of wholesale so you need to wait if you want good money. Again 67K very desirable. I would be interested if it was a '96 or one of the 30 1995 Sovereigns. Do not go by KBB or the rest as the numbers are irrelevant for the XJ12. Right on the money for an Escort, Camary or anything else they built a couple hundred thousand of. For low production models it is not even close.

I happen to have one of the 19 1996 Sovereigns LWB that were produced hence the tag "1 of 19". Even more rare would be the 1997 XJ12 Sovereign lwb as they only produced 5.

The best way to sell your car is to a collector which would mean you now have a very small audience to cater to. Somebody looking for a daily driver is not going to pay what the car is worth. Too many better deals out there for same money on daily drivers.

Thank you so much for a great response. :)

Could you please tell how much it will cost to fix a valve cover leak and if the AC takes is slow to get cold , does this mean its a freon issue or does it need to be replaced?
I will call the Jag heritage today
PS
you mentioned 96 over 95 why is that?

Valve cover will be the cost of a gasket and a six pack. Easy fix. Air, hard to say without diagnostics, could just be low. I collect '96's as they were the last model year for the XJ12. Only 196 produced, about 180-ish over here. So it's just a numbers game. Less '96's than '95's. Last model year is generally more valuable than others. I spect only half of the x305's are still on the road as daily drivers. Of them most will be in tough shape. Another 10 years and they will be of much more interest and value than now. Also allot less of them around. And for those of us who sat on some low mileage cars we will be in a much better place $$'s than we are today. If I would just have bought 10 '70 hemi Cuda convertibles in the 80's.

Thank you for the reply. I m gonna have that car inspected by a Jag dealer .
hopefully, their prices to fix the left valve gasket are reasonable.

I'm sure the Jag dealer will shock you when you see the list of items they recommend fixing. That estimate will probably be more than the value of the car. Of course, you don't have to have all that work done right now. But there are many things you will find that need doing eventually. A/C work can be very expensive and require several components to be replaced all at once.

The intake manifolds must be removed to access the camshaft covers. Doing one? Might as well do both. Be prepared to find a variety of oil leaks or seepage from several areas under that engine.

Much of the required work can be done by you, if you have some mechanical aptitude, and have tools and the service manuals.

Value is a touchy subject, but in general, these cars are still not valuable in the market. That is partly because cars on the market will have those expensive needs that very few are willing to take on. Also these days, fuel consumption is very important to most people, hence the electrics and hybrids' popularity.

They are more valuable to their owners because of their great qualities, when they are finally sorted and reliable. There is nothing quite like the V12. It is perfect for this type of luxury car and such a pleasure to drive.

I bet you could get that XJ12 for $5000 or less, if you are so determined.

Assuming that you are speaking as a potential buyer of this XJ12...

Another big plus with this car is that you would be buying from the original owner (or a dealer who got it from original ownership). That says a lot about how the original owner felt about the car. He kept it for 22 years! That means he appreciated it, and probably took very good, or better than average care of the car. It also means that you wouldn't have to deal with what a bunch of intermediate owners did (or mostly DIDN'T do, maintenance wise) with the car. Try to get a hold of any maintenance records for the car, that can make a difference too.

I was lucky to get my XJ12 from the original owner, and the car was in excellent condition at 14 years old, always dealer serviced, and with records.

You will probably learn here not to go to a Jag dealer with a car like that. Do a little more research and find several guys in your area who I am sure will know of an indy guy that will be a lot more help with a car that old. Motorcarman is our guy here in Texas. In fact he may know of someone in your area to go to. Do a search and send him a private missage.

Terry007 12-11-2016 08:06 PM

Thank you guys. I will call the dealer on Monday and ask for the service history .I may find a nice service manager that would give it to me.
Unfortunately, there are not too many Jag Mechanics near Arcadia CA,so I 'll have to deal with the Jag dealer, Rusnak in Pasadena

EZDriver 12-12-2016 08:21 AM

It doesn't have to be a specific Jag mechanic. It just has to be a good independent mechanic that has your best interest at heart and is not against using this forum and parts suppliers other than Jaguar. Dealer mechanics for the most part are no more knowledgeable about this car than a good INDY. Modern Jags have essentially no relationship to a 21 year old Jag. A very high percentage of dealer shops are driven by the bottom line only. I have seen this in spades recently.

Use this forum a lot.

I passed on the XJ12. I'm not a great mechanic like some of you, and I guess the lack of service record scared me. Though she is a beauty. The airbag light was on and, although I ran a carfax that showed no accident, I got worried. The dealer said it was a seatbelt issue Anyway, so long XJ12
