XJ12 Radiator Fittings
 

Hi everyone,

My father owns a lovely Daimler Century and today he had to replace the sensor that's mounted on the radiator itself (fan switch I think it is, but forgive me if this is wrong).

Anyway, what turned into a simple job has become a bit of a nightmare, had to take the radiator out as access is very difficult.

One of the union fittings to the PAS reservoir pipes is not very good. It looks like maybe either corrosion or possibly it may have been forced on a little too much at the factory. Part of the thread is damaged and no longer there, the thread inside the union connection had part of the thread in it. All the others are fine.

My question is are these fittings replaceable? It seems like a bit of a waste changing the entire radiator as that's fine. It's the male connection on the passenger side (drivers side if you are outside the UK).

I managed to remove the pieces of welded on aluminium from the hose connection using a tiny 1mm grinding bit on the Dremel so managed to save my dad £70 for a new hose.

I so wish the car factories would use some grease when assembling these things. I had a similar issue when changing A/C pipes on my other car. The aluminium threads just fell to bits when undoing the pipes.

I followed that it's one of the 50 V12 Daimler Century vehicles produced to commemorate 100 years of Daimler at Coventry and that the task started with removal of the Radiator Fan Switch (item 11):

After that I can't work out whether you're asking about a PAS fitting or an AC fitting .......

The above extracts from JEPC show what is listed for both PAS and AC. Availability can be a different matter.

In the first picture you can see on the radiator the temperature switch (number 12).


Just above that are two aluminium threaded connectors. The top one is fine but the thread on the lower one is damaged.


The hose (which is part 5 in you middle picture) I have managed to salvage. Part of the aluminium thread was embedded in the thread of the connector (my guess is the thread simply just broke away when my Dad was undoing it). Using a tiny Dremel bit I've managed to remove the metal from the thread.


As I say a bit of a pain because my guess it's just a case of corrosion, I suppose if I was doing the job I may have sprayed some WD40 or similar on each connector beforehand (being the rad is at the front of the car and obviously gets all the abuse from the weather and elements). Unless it was done slightly wrong at the factory.


My Dad is taking the radiator to a specialised hydraulics company here on Guernsey, just to see if he can just replace the fitting. Otherwise the radiator is fine.

I see the relevant part now. Unfortunately not available from Jaguar who just buy in complete radiators.

Not a difficult job for a specialist radiator repairer and there's plenty on the mainland if none located in Guernsey.

Yeah my dad spent yesterday morning driving around the island to try and resolve the issue.


He even found someone on the islands who repairs radiators for classic cars and industrial vehicles for Europe!


However they were unable to help so my Dad has managed to source a reconditioned one for sale on the interweb. Managed to save himself around £120 over a new one so not too bad.


I'm just hoping it fits ok as I know what Jaguar were like with parts updates. However there are only two part versions I can see, so fingers crossed.


Also had to purchase another temp switch as the one he got on EBay unfortunately has now fallen to bits. I'm starting to feel really sorry for him now!

I can think of worse ways to spend a day than driving around Guernsey. :icon_lol:

According to JEPC, the original Radiator P/N CCC6168 is NLA and has been superseded. This suggests the later Radiator (P/N MNA4190FA) will fit the entire VIN range.

I hope that's the end of the problems and his Century is soon running again.
