Ran out of gas in my 2006 XJR way before tank was showing empty. Turns out the fuel level has malfunctioned (obviously). Unfortunately I am being told that I must replace two fuel pumps totaling 1600 in parts and labor. All this to ensure I know how much fuel I have in the car. Jag dealership in vegas is telling me that I cannot just fix the leveling issue by itself- I must replace both pumps. Is there a more inexpensive fix here?

I think there are a couple of issues and first,did you run out of gas or did the fuel pumps fail.I think what the service person was trying to tell you worst case.The Fuel level device is a simple device and doesn't normally fail so did you run out of gas,then just refill it and don't let it get to less then quarter tank.But you are not looking at what is the problem like the service guy,you are not getting fuel.The fuel level only tell you what is in the tank,not the delivery to the engine.
That quote for the fuel pumps is about normal,the cheap way is to do it yourself,its about a 4-6hour job for the dealership.The parts from Jag are about 400.00per pump and strainer,so parts 800.00+ 800.00 labor= $1600.00.I'll bet the fuel sensing sensor is working fine and will not have to be replaced.The other part they may replace is the wiring harness which also can fail or breakdown.Good luck and keep us posted.

No issues with the fuel being delivered. I have been driving the car now for a few weeks after this problem...always ensuring I fill up at a quarter tank. The car runs exactly now as it did before I had the issue.
