2004 XJ8 Power steering failure + overheating.
Hello,
I am so hoping that I can get some insight into the following!
I was driving down the freeway here in Phoenix last night in my 2004 XJ8 with my daughter, when all of a sudden I hear a high pitched squeal for about 10 seconds, followed by the battery light coming on, loss of power steering, and temperature gauge rapidly climbing.
i slowed down and pulled over as quickly as I could and turned off the engine. I popped the hood while The fan continued for a while, and once cooled, I noticed that the PS res was bone dry (I just changed my oil the previous weekend and checked fluids... all good). I also lost some coolant. I ended up towing it.
Any idea what I am looking at? I am not a mechanic at all... any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

1. the squeal suggests either the drive belt or an accessory issue.
2. the battery light coming on suggests the alternator was no longer rotating.
3. temperature rising suggests water pump no longer rotating.
3. an empty PS reservoir/loss of power steering suggests a broken pipe or steering rack seal.
You did exactly the right thing to stop and have the vehicle towed. Overheating a Jaguar V8 is an engine killer.
The simplest explanation is the Drive Belt (often called the 'serpentine' belt) has broken:
As can be seen from the diagram, it drives the Water Pump, Power Steering Pump, AC Compressor and Alternator (generator). Once the belt stops turning, so do all these accessories.
A second possibility is the Tensioner (item 2) has seized. This is a spring loaded pulley which keeps the drive belt under tension. It is a known failure on the V8 engine.
The loss of PS fluid raises a third possibility - power steering pump failed.
Your prompt action has almost certainly avoided catastrophic engine damage but, if you are not able to DIY repairs, the cost could still be an unpleasant surprise if it turns out to be the power steering compressor.

Thank you for the reply, Graham.
I heard back from the local Jaguar shop I had it towed to. Got a call later in the day with this diagnosis:
Siezed AC compressor. AC seized up and the serpentine belt was consequently shot.
$1800 to fix. Ouch. What a rude awakening to the world of the Jaguar!

That's bad luck-a very rare fault AFIK.Siezed AC compressor. AC seized up and the serpentine belt was consequently shot.
