2004 XJ8 VDP - squeaking noise from steering wheel
I'm about to purchase this vehicle, has quite a few miles on it (78k). The service inspection people tell me it makes suqeking noise from thesteering wheel when turning.
Any speculation what the reason might be and a repair estimate?
Help is much appreciated. Thanks,
Venelin
Edit:noise was comming from the steering wheel, not the front wheel.

Well less than a month later, it seems the noise is back! What gives?!
Actually it seemed like the noise didn't go away completely after the first couple of days. Then I decided to take my scarf and run it between the steering wheel and the column to see if any plastic was rubbing. I think that pushed some grease into the friction areas and silenced the noise for about a month. I will try just adding a little bit more grease and see what happens!
I find it hard to believe that it could be a steering rack issue as the noise happens even as I just barely touch the steering wheel--I haven't tried to listen for it with the engine off, though.

...is the noise coming from the steering wheel column? I have 06 Super V8 and I get that noise especially in the morning. Then it goes away.
Is it really the power steering pump/mechanism, not the steering wheel column?
If I fix it per the TSB, the sound would go away. Hmmmm... back to the dealer I merrily go.

It is def from the pump
I too thought it was a rubbing steering wheel, thats exactly what it sounds like inside the car, plastic on plastic and noisier when cold;but it really is from the pump.
I added one bottle of the Jaguar additive and did the lengthy install procedure, it stopped it for a week or so, I added another bottle and really no change;I then turkey bastered enough out to add Lucas Oil stop sqeak n leak, that has stopped it, but there is still a few minutes on a cold day start that it is there.

OK! I will!
Sadly, this morning, the noise is back just as bad as it was before. I wonder if this is weather related. It was quite cold this morning.
Last night the steering was definitely 100% quiet after all my flushes and "exercising" the steering, but this morning I did an additional flush of the reservoir (maybe 1/2 quart?) and the noise is back!

FWIW, my technician said my steering wheel "squeak" was caused by wear on the various electrical compression rings within the steering wheel hub. Cost to replace = $600...requires pulling the wheel, etc., etc., etc., about 3+ hrs. labor + parts. I have chosen to live with the noise, which comes and goes depending on outside temperatures.
He also said don't even think about squirting some WD40 in there...that would cause untold problems.
(My '04 XJ8 has 170K miles.)
